Hey guys! First of all I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this! New to this site!
I need some advice for my dad. My fathers been driving 18 wheeler for about 19 years now. Has a clean record! No tickets, arrests or anything! Just few seat belt tickets and thats it!
Thing is I don't know much about trucking but I see him busting his ### for his friends company. He kind of just drives for him with no benefits or anything and isn't making much. With his experience I would assume he can get a great job where the pay is great and he would have benefits?
I heard the trucking business isn't that great at the moment so I'm just trying to get my research on before I can pursue him to apply somewhere else where he would be better off working. I heard companies like shoprite and walmart have great pay! What would be the process of applying for these jobs? And what are the chances of him getting a job with these types of companies or better with his experience? Does experience even matter? If someone can advice me please it would be greatly appreciated!
Need advice for my dad!

With that kind of experience, he can find a job easily. But those seat belt tickets are going to kill him.
Seat belt tickets aren't actually for seat belts.. someone got themselves pulled over for speeding, and talk his way out of that ticket, for the lesser offense. Even if that isn't true, that is how a lot of companies are going to look at it. -
No offense but if he's been driving that long he knows what to do. If he's staying working for a friend he probably has his reasons.
-
Yup- unfortunately he's just like the rest of us- he might complain once in awhile but he likes the pain. If he didn't he would hurt himself somewhere else and complain about it.
-
Yes there are plenty of things that he likes working with his friend. But the reason he complains is because the pay just isn't cutting it anymore and he gets no benefits. I work as a security guard at best buy warehouse and I was talking to one of the truck drivers there that my dad drives a truck aswell. And I told him that I "THINK" he ends up making close to $80,000 - 100,000 a year. Its a lot of money but its kind of not cutting it right now. The truck driver there told me that If he worked for Shoprite or Walmart he could end up making aroun $150,000-200,000 a year. Was trying to find out if this is true and where one would apply for these?

$150,000.00 to $200,000.00 is gross pay for an Owner/Operator. After fuel, taxes, repairs and expenses that taxable income should be between thirty and fifty thousand dollars a year.
Just a warning and a word of caution: NO ONE lies and exaggerates like fishermen and truckers.Kujo, Mommas_money_maker, Leftlane101 and 3 others Thank this. -

It is my understanding that many Walmart drivers do earn in excess of $80,000/year. I don't know about Shoprite. Your dad will need to get in touch with the recruiting offices of each company. Many now do online applications. It is difficult to get on with Walmart, but with experience and a good record, he might be able to get on with them.
There are a number of other carriers that pay well and have good benefits. If he wants to make a change, I am sure that he won't have a problem finding what he wants. You didn't mention the type of freight he would like to pull, so I assume that he wants to pull a van?
Crete and Schneider are a couple of carriers who have been around a long time and offer benefits. There are many others. But, most won't be able to match Walmart pay.
