Ok. I am in the process of being recruited to Pam. I have been told allot of different things about it but am unsure if it is a good idea. I don't have the funding to just pay for my own cdl so I am limited on driver paid schools. Also I have a criminal background so I am limited on most choices. I understand that I have to sign a contract for the first year, I am not concerned about that. However, I am concerned about receiving the proper training to become a productive part of the trucking industry. Ft wayne Indiana c1 is where I will have to go. But please any insight good or bad about this company or of other companies that will hire an ex con and pay for cdl school and training would be greatly appreciated.

If Pam will get you in with those creditials, you better grab it and stay with them a year. They are not the worse company, not even in the bottom 10.
I think swift will also, but they are worse in my opinion. I know a lot of good drivers come from Pam, Including me 18 years ago.airforcetoo, BoyWander, Skydivedavec and 1 other person Thank this. -
If you can manage to get a CDL at the DMV, without formal schooling, Paschall Truck Lines will hire you. They will train you and it's free if you stay with them for 12 months.
Yes, if PAM will hire you, take it. The next option would be Swift.
Many drivers that post on here went to C1 and have good jobs now. Evidently C1 has a good training program.Skydivedavec and the muffin man Thank this. -
Ok. Thank you. They said I have to pay 2, 000 back over the coarse of my first year but I need to do something. $24, 000 a year in a factory compared to 35, 000 in a truck. But I have heard both good and bad from people and I have come to the conclusion that its an open opportunity and its only a year. Ive been told no matter where you are the first year youre gonna put up with a lot of crap. But thanks for the advice guys.
airforcetoo Thanks this. -
I went through PAM when I started in 2005. It wasn't that bad, really. They were a decent company to work for, but that was 8 years ago. I think they want you to team driver with another student driver for the first 6 months, though, after your training.
Your trainer probably wont teach you ####. In fact, he probably just got through training a few months ago himself.
Mine just used me as an extra-money maker, since he got paid for my mileage, too.
You will probably see a lot of Laredo.airforcetoo, Skydivedavec and the muffin man Thank this. -
Hey thanks man. I'm silk waiting but I am going to take it. We all gotta stay somewhere. And I can do a lot worse than pam
Skydivedavec and pattyj Thank this. -
I went through ft wayne C1 school back in 2011, you aren't going to learn much there. Just enough to get a cdl. I went with PAM as well and lucked out in getting a very good and organized trainer. Unlike most of the people I kept in touch with in those days I stayed my full year then went on to bigger and better things. I also lucked out in getting assigned a mid roof for my first truck ie. no teaming. Don't expect to get home much and do expect to sometimes sit an entire weekend waiting for a load. I have missed a scheduled hometime by as much as 5 days before. It will get frustrating.
Knowing what I know now after 6 months put in an application with Marten. Better equipment, better terminals, better dispatchers, better pay, regional gets you home every other weekend. Detention and trailer maint pay. And I have never sat without a load.
That being said PAM is a decent start, you could do worse.Lonesome, airforcetoo and Skydivedavec Thank this. -
Ok. The teams thing I've heard is bad. But they did say I should be home once every two to three weeks.

Did you go to C1 in St. Louis?the muffin man Thanks this.

if you're teaming maybe ... but you still gotta fight for it... at the end of my sentence in PAM they were not caring about hometime at all ...when I started they were great but then things changed and everything seemed to go downhill fast ... the other day I spoke with a guy who was still with them; he was thinking about leaving too, especially since they got him stuck on the walmart detail ... best of luck sir ...if you get frustrated easily, don't go with PAMthe muffin man and Skydivedavec Thank this.
