You didn't mention the type of freight you plan on hauling. Unless you try to do power only, you will also need to buy or rent a trailer. At one time you could make a decent living hauling within what I call the Texas triangle. This is the area from San Antonio to Dallas to Houston. I have known a few owners who have done well in that area and managed to be home frequently. I have not seen that much in that area that is worth hauling lately.

I'll hopefully be buying a flatbed trailer soon.
I took your advice and changed from intrastate to interstate with fmcsa yesterday so I'm not as limited.
