You might not be making any more money to haul hazmat but I guarantee your company is.Just slow down on hazmat,be safe and dont let them rush you. I mean youre doing them a favor. If everthing not safe or legal dont pu.Last thing take the time(so what if it slows u down) make sure the bills have an emergency response number on them and when you get inspected at the scale (be ready and able to rattle of exactly what hazmat u r hauling and what procedures you would take it if leaked out or caught on fire. Dont look at them in the scalehouse and smile. Try to look like somebody not easy to deal with kinda hardboiled roll your window down ease onto the scale so scale doesnt shake etc. Like youve been thru a couple thousand times. Worked for me.If you pull in with your hat on backwards shake the scale and look at them smiley theyll probably be a shakedown.

If you have a Hazmat load the bills are supposed to be folded with the Hazmat information showing and the 800 number high lighted in the event of an emergency. The four digit UN number should also be highlighted. If you do not have a high light pen then underline both of the above. In the EGR book look up the procedure to be followed in the event of an emergency and tuck the bills into that page. The bill/book combination need to be within drivers reach from your seat and can NOT be stored in a brief case. You should also be able to tell the DOT the location of the Hazmat in the load if only a portion of the load is Hazmat.

Holland and YRC are nearly bankrupt and therefore having trouble hiring drivers. Long term not good places to work but may get you 1 year of experience. Holland has a terminal in Joliet, IL.

Good of you to get out of there.
(although I probably would have recommended you stuck it out until January to get your 3rd month)

I know you want local but since Chicago is such a high tax area, you might want to expand your search a little bit.
Try looking up above the state line in Wisconsin.
You might find a few outfits out there that are close enough to home to be "local" but far out enough that many of their drivers "don't do Chicago".
I'm originally from NYC, but out here in (eastern) PA there are about a dozen outfits that run into NYC every day.
They look for drivers not scared of NY and have the knowledge base and skills to go up there without issues.

Might be the same case in South Wisconsin with regard to Chicago.
