If he has to be home daily from the start he should concentrate on companies that do roll-on/roll-off which deliver industrial "dumpsters", cement ready-mix, trash hauler, yard truck/switcher moving trailers at factories & warehouses. Straight truck work might also get him home daily, but I don't know about straight trucks.
Look at a few job applications online to see if his DUI is long enough ago to not be an obstacle. I forget if those need to be 5 or 10 years old. He should get a copy of his Motor Vehicle Report from his state. He will also need to supply a 10 year work history or from now back to high-school, whichever is shorter. -
A friend.......why isn't the friend asking these questions?

Almost nobody will touch him with no CMV(18whls) history. He might have to bite the bullet and go with a big carrier for 2 years then once he has that under his belt. Switch. UPS and FedEX are good for home daily, but you need 2yrs EXP.

He doesn't know how to use the forumsx1Heavy Thanks this.

Tell him to try the local beverage distributors and ask them if they would hire someone with a DUI from 5yrs. If they say NO, tell your friend to find another line of work. I'd do that BEFORE paying for a CDL

...and yet he's going to have to know how to navigate his way through peoplenet/quallcom/whatever other ELD/fleet management system the company he goes to uses...

Well the company he was just as was associated with Miller and he said he may go back once he get the cdl because they always wanting cdl drivers but he said they don't make enough 9/hr for straight trucks and 11/hr for cdl with no benefits.
