Sometimes laziness is the obstacle that prevents one from working smarter.

If I was a single parent with 3 kids at home I would do what ever came down the road. Signing a contract to get a CDL he may not be able to use, may not like using knowing he is gonna have to pay the contract holder one way or another. I hope the kids are tough.

If he goes with a big carrier, who will watch his children & pick them up from day care?

Some people you just can't do much for; sometimes they have to get off the bench and carry the ball. I guess his plan to get the cdl then not show up for orientation is the best plan for him.

Just a little off topic but I was just wondering that if this guy ended up with custody of the three kids, I wonder what the woman was like.

    Serioously?

He's going to be learning how to use a smart phone at least, qualcomm satellite communications or similar at most and possibly also a laptop in his work/

Forums are easy. Teach him. That way he may feed him self several times a day rather than being reliant on second hand information.

If he must be home then OTR is not for him. It's local work home daily. Cement Mixer, Ready Mix, Flatbed supporting a electric utility company, plow driver in winter and so on etc. Be so lucky there is a mass of heavy vehicles required to do America's work all over the place.

Noticed a DUI there 5 years ago... that may or may not hurt him still. Due to the nature of safety and some of the freight that is involved with a very high dollar value in excess of a million a previous DUI would likely not be insurable for that kind of work.

Frankly if the Courts awarded him three kids, then I would not touch the female with a 15 foot pole for a variety of reasons. In our marriage, cancer took care of the idea to have kids. Fortunately I can still have kids after I remarry someday, if it comes to that, but to be honest, Kids are a liability at the moment. It's not the time be having them.

What bothers me is that he may think that he will make a lot more money than other jobs which to me is part of our problem, wonder why some local jobs are being offered at $10 or $11 an hour.

If your friend has 3 young kids at home as a single parent, i would advise a different career path. How about something like courier driver which you can do in a van without spending a fortune.

This line of work requires a very early start and a late finish, who is going to get the kids up and dressed for school and collect and feed them etc. I'm not too sure what the working conditions are like in the states but here in ireland 7am would probably be a late start lol. I would stick to warehousing.
