Headed into Canada with a couple of loads. Anybody use a smartphone app for an e-log? What e-log works best in Canada? I really want to avoid trouble.
Need Canada e-log advice

Log in Canada as you do the US and you will be okay.

Might be interesting to say the least.
The program uses the gps function of the phone. This is something that the phone company told me leads to additional charges in Canada, so I disable it. -
First trips into Canada ? A couple of things you need to be aware of . They require a 36 hour restart and the logs from the past 14 days . This is because they require an off duty period of at least 24 hours every 14 days . They also require the license plate numbers of the truck and trailer to be on the log . My e-logs have an option to enter the license plate numbers during the pretrip .
Canada scales really check e-logs thoroughly . It took them an hour to do a level 2 on me at the Trafalgar Scales on the 401 .
We use Xata Turnpike e-logs paired to a Blackberry . Canadian scales have the Xata site downloaded . -
Should have mentioned that I have an Iphone. Xata isnt compatible. Figures. Checking with Verizon to see if there will be a charge. (Thanks!)
Since we are just a small ag business that rarely strays far from the States, we just use a log book. I understand that's due to change here, eventually? Anybody recommend an installed e-log over an app.? -
My phone carrier is Verizon if that helps. -
Pretty much true, but there are a couple areas where you can be US-legal and in violation of Canadian HOS:
1) You must have a continuous period of 24hours offduty/sleeper at least once in the last 14 days
2) You must keep logs for 14 days
3) You can only drive 13 hours total in a midnight to midnight time period (possible under US rules to drive 14 if you stop only for a 10)
4) If you are exceeding 70 hours in 8 days & relying on resets, your reset must be 36 hours
5) Your logs must show the license plate numbers of all the equipment you pull (in US you can use truck/trailer number assigned by company)Last edited: Apr 28, 2013
GR8, Rocks and Mark Kling Thank this. -
That's probably the best advice. When I used paper logs I always did that in Canada since I wasn't smart enough to figure it out. Especially if your going to turn right around back to the States. My Company uses PeopleNet. They do all most all the thinking for me. Only thing I have to do is make sure I take 10hr off the night before I return State side.

Canada is 70/7 not 70/8. Good points though. Never gave much thought about number 3.

Are you sure? I'm seeing that some provinces allow 70/7, but that Canada main is still 70/8: http://www.driversdailylog.com/ddlhoursofservice.htm
