I run local and if I run out of hours for the day my company will send another driver out in our company van. He will then drive the truck back and I have to drive the van back. I know that I can be on line 4 till the cows come home, but can they make you operate a non commercial vehicle? Sometimes it can be a 2 to 3 hour drive back.

Can they make you? Yeah, I guess if you want to keep working there they can. There's nothing illegal about it unless the guy they send out has been on the clock all day but that's not your problem if he gets caught. Now if they're making you do that and it's cutting into your 10 hour break, then you can get busted for it. Be a bit of a stretch for them to prove that you drove the van back though.

Question 14: How must a Commercial Motor Vehicle CMV driver driving a non-Commercial Motor Vehicle CMV at the direction of a motor carrier record this time?
Guidance: If Commercial Motor Vehicle CMV drivers operate motor vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)s of 10,000 pounds or less at the direction of a motor carrier, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires those drivers to maintain records of duty status and record such time operating as on-duty (not driving).lostNfound and yarddogmbw Thank this. -
Thanks everyone. I just wanted to make sure.

What if the company has the truck being repaired and then directs you to get a rental car and go home.
I do not see this as a possible thing to even be concerned about. -

When you pay for you apportioned plate/IRP, you pay a tax to every state (thats why it cost so much!). So why do we have to pay again another tax to every state to get a IFTA permit?
thesvg Thanks this.
