does cali require a dpf or just that your exhaust emmissions test pass? could the old school propane injections clean it up enough or one of those nitrogen systems?
I was looking into a nitrogen injection system just fir the heck of it until the dealer told me 20k. I said you better have me a laundry list of satisfied customers if you want that kind of money out of me!!!

You need to be compliant. Either a DPF retrofit, or 2010 newer engine. If you have a 2007 and newer also, they are in compliant. I ask about the nitrogen, CARB said they are not compliant(I think nitrogen is non compliant for 2 reasons, 1) you can tamper with it(shut it off), 2) I think its more about politics), I dont know about the propane injection but I seen a few of those around.

Seems like if the truck is in decent shape you could sell it to a non-CA buyer and put that towards something CARB compliant. Lots of people looking for good older trucks, especially with the Detroit. Something to think about.

TESTING:
I just recalled that the only testing that is required before a DPF retrofit install is the opacity snap test(smoke test). You have to be under 20%, if your higher then that, you will need to find a tune that gets it at 20%Last edited: Jun 14, 2015
Reason for edit: correction...20% not 40% -
I had looked into a retro fit for a 12.7 the price was around 18,000 for a passive system, the issue for me was we do run a LOT of trips to Cali. BUT we are usually straight in straight out, the issue was we avg. OVER 150,000 per year per truck, they said it needed to be cleaned every 50,000 the expense on maintenance and down time would be the killer.
NOW, why can't we run a dual exhaust system? While in the other 47 truck runs thru muffled exhaust coming into cali. switch exhaust flapper valve to run thru DPF, this would keep the majority of miles OFF the DPF, no one has told me why this won't work??? -
Trust me....we all have thought of that. But thats it.....CARB doesnt want any tampering with the system. We O/O in Cali would be using the bypass then if we came across an inspection, we would hit the switch and of a flapper and be in compliant of time of inspection. Thats why CARB doesnt want to pass the Hydrogen system, for the same reason, you can tamper with it and bypass it. I mean, it makes sense, use any system to be compliant in California and bypass it when your out of the state. You know many of us would be bypassing it while in California. CARB is ahead of the game. They want you to be compliant period and TAMPERED PROOF.......

I'm sure your right Dave, BUT, I think it would be a hard sell in court over a ticket that was issued to a truck/engine that was compliant at the time of the inspection.
