For an out of the box factory CB, you do not need anything real fancy such as a 10K etc. You want an antenna that will have most of the "load" above the roof line of the truck while not taking out birds and low flying aircraft without having to "Bull Horn" the antennas. For this I highly recomend a fiberglass antenna. I have used the wilson Silver loads with great success. Stay away from the external coil type antennas as they are not needed and they are hard to get the majority of the antenna above the roof line without fear of taking out aircraft in the process.
Need good antenna!

You can read the CB Tech forums on the web.
They say one of the biggest mistakes truckers make is mis-matched systems.
You want an antenna closely rated wattage wise to your CB for overall performance when tuned properly.
If you have a 200 watt system or 4 watts in your case, you don't want a 10,000 watt antenna. Sure it might receive better, but it offers way too much resistance transmitting.
He's not going high tech. I wouldn't even bother changing the antenna system if he wasn't going all the way. -
FriedTater Thanks this.

I think (or hope) he ment to have a tuned antenna to match the impedence of the radio thus having low SWR.

I'm not at the truck and have a terrible memory.
I bought a truck stop antenna that is shorter than the stock fiberglass whip on a Freightliner, and it has a set screw metal tip.
Radio check said I sound better with it.
BTW my Radio is a cheap wallyworld Cobra 19 -
I use a single Hustler SBC, center coil with an overall length of 46". I have a Galaxy 98VHP and get out 30+ miles easily. I run the same setup on my pickup. Very reasonable # $50. One hot tip on a Volvo is to get some flat braid wire and run the antenna ground down to the battery box and connect it to one of the mounting bolts.
