Where in FL? Some companies don't hire drivers from FL, some only hire from north of I-4 or some other dividing line. You should write down what kind of schedule and conditions you need and then look for companies that have something acceptable. Answering "I'll take anything with any X" won't help you as much as having specific answers so you can at least compare what is being offered with what you would like.

I can't help but think that I'm probably insulting your intelligence by saying this -- but if you wanna return to the hazmat tanker world -- southern Louisiana (for you) is where it's at.

If you haven't' pulled reefer think about it first. I pulled reefer loads on and off for 2 years and didn't care for it one bit. Customers have long delays, detention pay is mostly a possibility, not as much a reality, and it can often require split breaks and "creative" logbook manipulation to make appointments, plus that freaking noise 2 feet from your head while you try to sleep. I almost never had customers take 4-8 hours to load/unload me except in reefer. It was routine on the loads I hauled no matter what any dispatcher or customer said when you asked them about delays. Just because this customer has held drivers for 6-8 hours since 1938 the dispatchers still plan for you to be empty/loaded in 30 minutes so you won't be late for the second stop, and if you are late you can't get detention pay no matter how long you wait. Too much hassle/noise/frustration for me.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I had a very busy day yesterday that lasted til late in the evening. Thanks to all who responded.
Chinatown, yes my home in Florida is not too far from Jacksonville. Greatly appreciate the recommendations and I'll definitely take a look at each one. Yes again to Louisiana State Taxes and the amount of taxes LA takes out over the year is not good.
lual, thank you for your kind comments. Very thoughtful! Trimac is a good company and I've known several drivers who used to work for them. I will see what they're currently offering. Regarding the South LA job market. Yes, if a person wishes to haul tankers, hazmat or both, you can usually find a job. The benefit I have from growing up in that area is, I've been doing this for so long and know so many people in the industry, that I know how most of them operate and I know who to stay away from! I'll leave it at that as I don't like being negative.
tscottme, yes I've pulled refers early in my driving career. The refer noise never bothered me but, to acknowledge your comments about wait times and delays at shippers and receivers..... Been There Done That! Wouldn't mind at all pulling a refer if every place I had to go would just get me IN and OUT within a reasonable Time Frame. I don't know if that's a possibility and when I'm rested and ready to work, there's nothing worse than sitting around waiting.
kemosabi49, Good Point and normally would agree. If I exhaust all other possibilities and do not secure a good job, I would consider that path. It's not the company or the job, it's the Memory Association that will come along with the job. Basically, I've had to recover from a serious trauma I'd never wish on my worst enemy and unfortunately, within that trauma, my previous job and everything that it encompassed, is a part of that trauma. Trying to Move On and Move Past the bad if you will. I hope this explanation makes sense. I normally would never talk about this but have been encouraged to speak about it as a part of getting over a mountain of pain. Easier said than done.Truckermania and kemosabi49 Thank this. -
Reefer companies today pay detention pay while waiting and also pay lumpers to unload the trailer. Not like the old days when the driver had to do that. Just read the Marten Transport pay schedule to understand how reefer companies operate today. I did reefers 18 years with no regrets and would do it again if I wanted OTR.

Thanks Chinatown, I'm checking all of these out and more. Good to hear detention is being paid on the refer side. Never had to worry about that too much pulling tanks. All detention time was paid.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
