It's one of the steps at any rate. I wish you the best of luck on getting your CDL and a job that allows you to use it.

Im new to the forum as well and really glad to have found it. I do realize iv got alot to learn in the trucking world but more than anything im willing and sincerely interested in a career in the trucking industry. There seems to be tons and tons of really useful information here and more importantly some really genuine people that are more than willing to help. This thread among many others caught my attention. Im in a similar situation as romans. Iv recently lost my job. I was terminated while on fmla due to a medical reason. (in short i was having back issues which are resolved now) I went to the local employmnt office to see what options i have. (with trucking in mind) i learn i may apply for the WIA grant. Now here's the catch iv ran into, correct me if im wrong, but its my understanding i must qualify for unemployment benefits in order to receive an approval for the WIA grant...among other things i know for sure: must score a 10.0 on the TABE test ( which i did pass), complete a job app and fill out a resume. As iv read before and learned most schools dont accept other fed grants because of the length of the course. I live in Kentucky and called several schools to be told either take out a loan (my credit is shot), get a cosigner(not an option here) or file for the WIA grant. Im frustrated as i am determined to get this done. I am just wondering has anyone else dealt with the WIA and know any options im not aware of other than being tied into a company training program. Iv been fore-warned to stay away from those and read on this forum enough to understand why. I did file for unemployment to only be denied twice and had a lawyer seek another appeal but backed out once realizing the state isnt bending. Il finish with saying, romans good luck buddy you sound very dertermind and hope maybe some of this was some help to you. If you my friend have any chance at getting a WIA grant i do know you can go to school independently and not have the burden if you will, of being tied into a company for alot of money to pay back.

If you go through a Community College to get your CDL you might be able to get a Pell Grant.

Other then that If you can't get WIA funding, a lone, or the cash, You could always just do the company training thing and hope you can make it threw the contract period.

Now for company training if this is your only option I would Recommend you look into Millis Transfer: there school is $2500 and they don't do the contract thing where they pay for it. You pay $500 upfront and they will finance the $2000 through them. There school is three weeks.

Good Luck, and Welcome to the Forum!

    Ozz,

I don't know it it varies by state, but here in Ohio you do have to be elegible for or actually receiving unemployment benefits in order to qualify for WIA. In Ohio you have to take the TABE and VALPAR tests also.

I was never in my life on unemployment I was unemployed but received no money from the gov. I still got WIA to pay for my schooling. They didn't even check my bank accounts or income at all. Hell, I didnt even go to the WIA worker I just called her on the phone and 2 days later the school had the check
