    Hey guys,

I’m hoping some of you CAT experts can point me in the right direction. I’ve got a 1995 Freightliner with a Caterpillar 3406E, and I need to locate the serial number that’s stamped directly into the engine block.

The engine is still mounted in the truck, it has the exhaust manifold on, and there is no data plate or ID tag on the engine at all. I’ve already cleaned the usual spots, but I’m not sure exactly what area of the block I should be focusing on.

    Can anyone tell me:

    • Which side of the block it’s on?
    • Roughly under or near which cylinders?
    • Whether it’s under the exhaust manifold or closer to the oil rail?

Any tips from guys who’ve actually found one on a worn 3406E would really help.

Thanks in advance — I appreciate the knowledge in this group.

Iirc if the tag is gone then look down below the turbo next to the oil cooler connection for the stamped number? It may be dirty or covered in paint though if your block has ever been repainted at some point. Dont quote me though as its been a hot minute since ive had to look for one.
