I'm just concerned that I won't be able to find a job OTR because I would no longer be a "recent grad" come April. This is temporary until April.

    That's true...............

but....if hometime is so important to you,

    why consider OTR ??

because I want to be able to get a local job in the future. It's next to impossible to get a local job with no experience at all.

    Just curious,

have you read other threads on here about this.

From drivers that skipped the OTR and went straight to local.

There are alot of drivers that have never been OTR, it is NOT mandatory....

I'm not trying to confuse you, just trying to expell this myth about HAVING to go OTR.

You're pretty sharp, and you'll make the right decision.

Not read all of them. It just seems that EVERYTHING up here in CT wants at least 12 months experience. I have yet to see a job that will hire someone with no experience.

I just talked to U.S. Xpress they said that a recent grad is anyone that graduated up to 18 months ago. I don't want to get rusty so maybe I would take a refresher course anyway.

I'm thinking now about taking this heating oil job for 15/hr and then it will run up in April and then HOPEFULLY they are still hiring and wouldn't have a problem with the fact that I did apply before and didn't follow through. I will have to contact them over the phone to find out.

Thats true, providing he is pulling a full size trailer.......but it sounds like a class B straight truck.......so again back to school. Back when I applied for student OTR training it was 60 days with exception of Werner which was like 6 months, but that wont be an option for Dave.

Its tough,...but money sounds about right for fuel oil home delivery. Getting your shifting and backing perfected with a trailer is what they are looking for in a short time after leaving school.

Wow, things really are changing! Hope some of the students see this, as just a short time ago some companies would even balk at 90 days. So thats cool, wonder if that is all starter/ student companies or just US? Star in Nashville used to be 30 days and they were very strict about it, even when they came to recruit at the school.....telling us there was no exception to this rule. Once you get good at backing, shifting and driving all night....then real hard work starts as the company loads you up to see what your made of.

Sounds like the best deal, as you dont seem to want to drive a truck over the road and be away from family anyway. I found as a new driver I made the best money staying out at least 3 weeks, plus its pretty hard work and mentally exhausting for the first few months......not everyones cup of tea.

It may just be US Xpress because they are all automatics and figure it's easy to come back and learn on. I'm surprised that they don't require a refresher course though because you are going to be extremely rusty backing up if you haven't done so in 18 months.

Most of the student companies are a "Cattle Call" and invite most who dont have backround issues and a clean driving record, but are quick to cut them loose if they do anything unsafe or are not proficient at the basic backing techniques......guess they figure its a crap shoot. Some make it.......many dont. It only costs them bus ticket to find out.

Just be careful if you are getting this information from a recruiter. The recruiter makes his money when you arrive for orientation. You need to verify the 18 months thing. The recruiter is a salesman. Buyer beware.
