And with no mention of your experience, if you have any at all, very few outfits will allow you to lease a truck to them with you as the driver.
Not being smart or mean, but you really need to learn the industry BEFORE your family spends the money on 2 yard ornaments.
You have no idea of how to find decent drivers, how to lease onto a company, and so on. The chances of you finding a good driver, never mind 2, that will hold your hand and guide you through all this, while not ripping you off, is next to nothing.
With no idea at all, I would say lease onto a mega carrier for a while to learn the business. They will help you out when needed etc. and do the paperwork for you. Mega does NOT mean Werner though. Schneider will take care of a lot of the small stuff, and are pretty fair to their OO's from what I have heard. Will you make great money right off the bat leased onto them? Nope, but you shouldn't go broke neither.

Most people start at the bottom and learn the business as they work their way up.

I guess you can start at the top (fleet owner) and learn the business as you lose all your mom’s cash if you choose, it’s a free country.

You might want to consider just getting a job driving for a year or 2 just to see if you even like the business before blowing all your moms cash though, just a thought.

BEFORE you buy equipment, find several insurance companies and make sure you 1. Find someone that will write a policy for "New venture" start up. and 2. Can afford the rates. It will be a LOT.

I see new venture start ups with only one truck, and an experienced driver that are paying $16k - $20k per year depending on the location.

How about you learn to do the job first. Go to someone like Maverick or TMC, learn to flat deck and drive for a year. Then get mom to buy you one truck and run that for another year leased on with a company. If you survive that, and mom is still into it, get her to buy you a second truck.

I never like to shoot someone down but I grew up in trucking and I mean everyone in my family but my mom owns and drives truck so I was doomed to buy a truck at the ripe old age of 17 and a senior in high school and yep my parents helped me out and now I'm 33 and learning a lot slower as in slowing down and learning or looking before jumping, but brother I spent a lot of my folks money I paid a lot of stupid tax and it sounds like your heading down that path but with a lot less knowledge about trucking than I had and I'll be the first to say I had no where near enough knowledge to be buying a truck back then. Sorry don't mean to mean but sometimes truth hurts. But I'm sure you've decided to jump plus its not your money but I will tell you when you lose (and I'm afraid you will) thanksgiving and Christmas gets awkward! But I hope the best to you, and as far as your buddy goes in trucking he is neither a true friend or informed about trucking to tell you jump in with no experience and use your moms money
