I respectfully disagree provided the fee is not going to hurt someone's financial situation. It is $125.25 at the TSA. I am going and getting mine tomorrow my classes start on Monday. I do not want to owe a company I am going to work for (be beholden to them) for anything. Nothing other than med/dental/401k/taxes out of my pay. It can also show a small bit of an applicant being serious about their career.

For future references, this is how it works under the new system. I just had to do this.

    1) You must take an EDLT approved course and then get your CDL.

    2) You can get your tanker and double/triples at anytime with nothing additional other than possibly having to pay for each knowledge test.

    3) For Hazmat, you now have to take a separate EDLT Hazmat theory course. It’s not the same as the course you took to get your CDL (at most schools). The good news is you can just take it online in about 2-3 hours. Now you are eligible to take the Hazmat knowledge test at the DMV.

    4) To actually get the Hazmat endorsement or TWIC you will have to get fingerprinted by an approved TSA location and wait for the results. I recommend doing this before you go to the DMV for the knowledge tests so you only have to go one time.

It all depends on where you are. When I got my hazmat, in April of 2021, I had gotten it inside 30 days. That was setting the appointment to take the written test at the dmv where I live in Texas, then going to do the fingerprinting, then receiving my license with the endorsement. If you have the online appointment setting for your area dmv office that shows available appointments, check the one with the earliest available you feel comfortable with driving to. I would take the written tests first, before doing the fingerprinting. You don't want to waste your money on that, fail the hazmat test however many times before they won't let you take it again for x amount of days or weeks and be out the money you paid for the fingerprinting, do you? I would think you could get the fingerprinting all done in one whack if you timed it all out correctly. I got extremely lucky when I got my appointment with the dmv though. It was only that one particular dmv office, that had that particular time on that particular day. Even when I tried to see if I reschedule it to a little later in the day if I would have changed it, it would have had to been set to a day that was weeks further away. You might get lucky. You might not. Just depends where you're at.
