What is the rule for right turn on red light?
In CDL class they told us like a car must have a full complete stop. Then if safe and not posted otherwise it is legal to turn right on a red light. I usually wait for green.broke down plumber Thanks this. -
Right turns on red are legal in all fifty states, but there are plenty of intersections with posted signs forbidding them. Additionally, some big cities ban them outright (NYC, DC) and many more are considering it because almost nobody actually comes anywhere close to stopping before turning. Of course, in a big truck it takes significantly more space and time (10 to 30 seconds or more) to make a turn from a dead stop than it does for a car, and often those limitations decrease the possibility of actually making a right on red.
It's possible there are some micromanaging carriers out there that don't allow their drivers to turn right on red regardless of the legality.
Personally, I think every intersection is different and in a lot of cases it's better to wait for the green light. But in situations where the intersection is relatively small and a truck needs to button hook into the oncoming lanes in order to make the right turn, the safest time to turn would obviously be when those lanes are empty, regardless of whether the light is red or green.broke down plumber, hope not dumb twucker and RollinChaos Thank this.
