It's a good idea to keep one eye on the tandems as you are turning. If someone does sneak in, or if you are cutting the turn too tight, it's nice to be able to stop and let the situation clear.
In school right now and have been told to stay in outside lane making left turns and inside lane making right turns. When turning left its not as sharp so you can keep your trailer in your lane but right turns are tighter and hard to keep trailer in your lane so you stay in right lane.
If turning right and there are 2 right turn lanes, take the outside lane unless you are certain the inside lane has a wide eough radius. And if taking the outside lane, go slow so you can stop if needed to avoid that accident.
Right turns are double and triple trouble. 1) Where are your tandems? 40 feet or shorter, longer? Shorter is good, longer requires much more care. 2) If there is a right turn lane? That usually makes the turn 8 feet tighter! Then you need to see how wide are the cross lanes that you are turning into. Do you have only one, two or maybe even use the oncoming left turn lane if unoccupied. If you are not familiar with how much room you have to complete the maneuver, then you have to prepare as if you have the least amount of room. 3) What is the radius of the curb? Will your tandems clip the curb and possibly a traffic signal pole, or those dang pedestrians that just have to stand right at the curb or even in the street? Many times turning right in Chicago I have had to honk the city horn to notify the moron pedestrians that my big truck is going to use all the road to make a turn and they need to get back on the sidewalk! If you need to be in the second lane from the right to clear all obstacles you may need to wait a light cycle or two to make the turn. Use the California, the convex and the fender mirrors to guarantee that there is no one sneaking up your right side. Speed is not your friend in such situations. In fact, most situations... Mikeeee
