Ok I have got out of a truck for a little bit and put in a office spot ( which isn't going to last long) but I need to file our ifta for the last quarter, how do I do it? The guy that was doing it is Mia now so I have to figure it out. Is there something online I can look at? I looked at the docked on ifta reporting but didn't help.

Ifta isn't that bad really. Take the total milage divided by the total gallons purchased to get the average MPG. then go to your jurisdiction miles plug in the miles for the jurisdiction and divide the jurisdiction miles by the average MPG to get the gallons of fuel you'll be taxed on. Then plug in the ammount of fuel you purchased in each jurisdiction. Then subtract the taxable gallons from the gallons purchased. this will give you either the taxable gallons or your credit gallons. then multiply the gallons (may have a negative this is ok) by the tax rate and that'll give you your tax due or your credit. Do this for all the states and then for the final row on the bottom. Don't feel bad I called my base state twice along with transcore or whoever the OOIDA refers you to for ifta when I did my first filing to make sure I did it right. If all else fails call your base state and ask for help they should be able to walk you through the process better than I can.

Its not hard but I use iftaplus.com because I am lazy and anything that makes my life easier .....

If you have not filed last quarter you should make sure your IFTA has not been suspended

Find out if your carrier is set up for on-line tax filing. I'd venture a guess that most states' on-line setup does the math for you. You enter jurisdiction miles and gallons into a table and the system calculates all the tax values and balances to totals. If you get stuck, call the tax office and get help. They know their system and probably most of the potential problems you may have with it. For example, on my first return Georgia's online system will indicate an error if you miss a surcharge state. However, it doesn't tell you that's what the problem is. A 5 minute phone call to the state IFTA office got me squared away after fooling with it for a lot longer than that.
