Werner recruits heavily in my area and their starting pay is as low as .26 per mile for new guys. I realize that noobs get little pay at most companies. Is their any company that pays around .30-.35 per mile for noobs?

Also is per diem relatively standard at all companies. I realize the local and some dedicated runs don't pay perdiem, but other than that is it the national average of about $50 per day at most places?

How about the per diem? Is it pretty much standard? I get per diem with my current job so I know how it works just curious if it is standard in the trucking industry.

From mine and my wife's experience at Werner i would not recommend them. My bad trainers web page is 98% of my wife's experience there.

Swift is not my first choice either, but it is good overall.

Most of the training companies employ forced dispatch - you take the load that they give you unless you can meet certain criteria.

No matter who you are with, you will sit for periods of time. You will run like mad for periods of time. Your paycheck will fluctuate from week to week. Per Diem -- do a search, you will find plenty of pro's and con's.

Other posters are correct about recruiters and who chooses who. Recruiters get paid for the number of bodies they get to orientation. Orientation is where you get closer to the truth of things. Actually driving is when you find out what the real truth for you is. The flow of how you get the job is 1) get CDL 2) apply to companies 3) get prehire (you aren't hired it's an invitation to 2+ day interview 4) go to orientation 5) get on trainer truck 6) get your own truck. At any of these points you can be sent home.

I tried to come up with a spreadsheet like you were talking about. My last stab is on my web site (has not been updated in almost a year).

You need to make yourself a list of pro's and con's. Pay is just one aspect of the job. You'll want to include benefits, how well the trucks are mamaintained, and if the company is going to help you in the future.

Rick is right about high turnover rates and those are the companies that can hurt your career. You can increase your chances if you not only apply on line but get out to the terminals and apply there too. Do more than the rest and your chances will increase.

you usually will go through afew companies at first tryin to find "the one" you might get lucky and get a good one off the hop. or one you like... if youre interested in a company.. try and find drivers at truck stops.. or where ever and ask them(nicely..lol) what that company is like. ask them to give ya all the dirt. most companies usually have the same pros..... may vary abit but not tooooo much. the cons to each company can be vastly different.thats what i found anyways. so thats why i say, try and ask drivers of the company you are eye-ing because you will just get BS from anyone that works in the office.
