Hi Vihiem.....I will check into a refresher for sure. I currently do not have my CDL. A few years prior to leaving Texas I surrendered it because i landed what I thought would be my last job at a Manufacturing facility. As it turned out it wasn't and being that I don't deal with a-hole people/bosses very well, I have decided it's time for me to get back in a truck where i can be alone most of the time since i don;t typically "play well with others", LOL. That brings me to where i am today.

Honestly, I would not be willing to pay my ex more, I want her and my kids to live in a nice place and my kids to have a good environment which they have at my currently salary. I will live in the street before I let them. Thanks for the idea though. All comments here are very much appreciated.

    Vilhiem Thanks this.

this is really a good thread! this is what I would do..rent a uhaul and get my cdl's get one with air brakes! now if you cant do that, there are companys on the craigslist that you can rent there big truck!! I think in dallas also try Denver! after that, do a lot research on o/o and get your own rig and a trl. get your on insurance and mc no.
and while you are doing all that go around to shippers and tell them what your doing see what they have. it can be done, but you can't think inside the box to do it! you been gone to long!

Thanks Kimbosa, yes, i didn't ever really think i'd get back in a truck but the older i get the less patience i have with people. I wish i would have just stayed with it all these years. Sitting at a desk staring a a computer is killing me. If i'm gonna be sitting I rather be looking out a windshield.

You have given me a good idea. I think i might just rent a U-Haul / Penske to test with, that would be the easiest and least expensive route for that issue. I'm about to start studying for the written portion of the test this weekend. Looks like these tests are a bit more detailed than back when i took mine in Texas.

Thanks. This time i am planning for a more successful career since i plan to buy my own truck.

Anyone have thoughts on an automatic transmission? I'm looking at buying a 2004 Pete-387 w/automatic. Never had any experience with the auto's.

Some like them, some don't! They take off slow, i had to go up to Shreveport and pick up one for fedex, like driving car. Backing up, there is a trick to it. I myself love the old school way.

Texas, We have similar needs. Here's what I've found. You might want to call around to some CDL schools near you. You probably don't even need a full refresher course. One of the local schools just charges 85bucks an hour to rent the schools truck (trainer included), and another 60 for the tester. I'll need to spend for some practice with a 53' box, but you probably won't need much time at all.

For employers, Schneider is who I'm looking at. The recruiter I spoke to says they don't care about a school, they care about a valid Class A. Their time in cab with a trainer is shorter than most. They don't do 3months as a team. Most drivers seem to report 1 or 2 weeks. The pay isn't good. After 6 months experience with them, you're eligible for their Choice o/o program. Avoid the lease, bring in your own truck, use their insurance, then one you hit 2 years, do whatever you want. It's the fastest route from here to O/O that I can find.

Thanks grease. That does sound like an option. However, I just cannot take the percentage of paycutt that would involve if even for a couple weeks. I pretty much live payday to payday right now mostly because of my divorce. I sadly cannot miss a payment or that will cause a huge mess.

I think i'm going focus right now on getting my CDL. Once I get that done, I will start back hitting up all the companies I can until I hopefully find one that will let me drive again.

Just go take your CDL exam on your own. Rent a truck and trailer for the driving portion. Get your physical done, because if you don't they will revoke the CDL anyways (new rule). After you have that done then shop yourself around for a job, you may get lucky. I had to do get mine back as well after a long absence. I don't advise you do it the way I did. Went to Swift, nothing wrong with their program except you are treated like a rookie no matter how much experience you have. After I got about 16 months under my belt, bought a truck leased onto Landstar, then got my own authority, and have been happy since. I really wish in retrospect I had just did the test here in KC, and rented the truck/trailer for $500.00 for the day and got my CDL back that way. I could have worked numerous jobs, with the driver market the way it is right now you should have no problem after you get your CDL back. Hell if you were not from Denver, I would take you. We don't have steady freight in Denver so that would be bad for you. Good Luck

I'm wondering how these companies verify OTR experience. Anyone know?
