A small company would know from the road test. I have had drivers come in and state they had X# years experience, take them out and tell them that there was no way in hell I would hire them. They could barely drive a car let alone a rig. I have had others that grew up on the farm, come in and drive the rig down the road just like it was nothing. Our insurance company allows us to make the choice, so far we have not had any problems operating this way. We would prefer at least two years experience, but if the guy has the skills, came from a farm, construction, or military background. We will waiver them and give them a shot.

Six to a year for most companies! 3 states or more. But like powerhouse said, if you can shake and bake someone put behind the wheel.

Most driver struggle with the transition to our style of running. They are so used to running miles, miles, miles. We are a revenue based company and that involves patience. I have had to become very picky as to the potential drivers that we are willing to help. We have had drivers steal, tear stuff up, abandon equipment, and so on. Therefor if we make an offer to a driver and are willing to mentor them to become an owner operator they must be willing to change from the stinken thinken that has occurred throughout the industry over the past 30 years. We have had supposed owner operators come in and tear up our trailers, then take off and leave. I have learned over the past few years to sift through the BS that most drivers have a tendency to shove out of their mouths. The biggest way to find out if they are truly team players is to require them to run team, either with myself or another one of my trusted drivers. This eliminates most of the wannabe's. I love the excuse that they don't run team because they can't sleep behind another driver. They should be concerned if we can sleep behind them, if we can't we ship them back home where they came from. I know this seems harsh, but since I implemented this I am getting better quality drivers that really want to learn the business. I don't want to waste my time nor equipment on those that don't want to better themselves, or don't believe that it is good to actually work for their wage. The lazy ones can just continue to stay where they are currently, we don't need them. I am only willing to work with potential operators not drivers. There is a drastic difference in the mentality of an operator vs a driver, it will take me over 100 interviews to find just one operator.

    Vilhiem and kimbosa Thank this.

I have been practicing the same theory , policy for years , did not get 27 trucks on the road without knowing how to weed out the BS and wanabees
