Have you tried Prime?? They pay pretty well while in training and he will get home every 3 weeks as a company driver. Not sure about the insurance though.
Need Some Information, please!

He did try Prime but was turned down. They said they didn't like more than a 6 month employment gap. He was laid off from his job and was on unemployment for close to a year. He searched everyday for a job but due to this economy it was a struggle to find work! He couldn't even get a job at McDonalds because of the massive amounts of applications due to the economy.
I dont understand why companies can do this knowing how the economy is. His top pick 'Maverick' did this and we were CRUSHED! I just don't see how honest people are being held accountable for the economy tanking. I could understand if they laid out on their sorry butts collecting benefits from the gov't, but can't understand how someone can prove they searched for jobs every day (SC Unemployment is Super Strict on this now) and couldn't find work.
It's very irritating to say the least! Really gets my blood boiling when it comes to politics! -
I understand your anger. I have friends in the same spot. It is crazy that they hold him accountable for something out of his control. I hope the best for your husband and your family. It seems to me that maybe Swift would be your best bet, but I can't say that for sure.

Having read this thread from the beginning, it seems determination to proceed is high. May I suggest that your husband (and you as well) read the threads by openroadguy (help a trucker wannabe out; then read I'm going with Swift), also a thread by chralb (running with watkins and shepard) from their beginning.
These are current, complete, and have feedback from a variety of expierenced drivers. There is background on openroadguy on some family issues that may matter to you, and from chralb about the process as a whole from start to being OTR solo as a flatbedder.
A couple of the replies you have here also followed these two from thier start and are reliable sources for dependable info.
BOL 2 U both!

Doesnt it just suck? Excuse my language, but I just find it so stupid! With this economy you would think no company would be allowed to do this, but unfortunately life isn't fair. All I could tell my husband was to keep his chin up because that rejection reason was out of control & absolutely stupid on the company's part. I told him if a company operated that way then it was better he didn't work them. *At least in my opinion.*
No one can say for sure what would be the best choice because it is ultimately up to my husband & what he makes out of it. I knew this posting this thread. However, I knew there were some honest opinionated people out there that could give some insight into it all.....and that information would lead to a more educated choice. I truely appreciate all the feedback I have received with exception to the comment about choosing Western Express so he "wouldn't be made fun of." I just found that to back up my thoughts on the CB bullying of SWIFT drivers and others who work for less popular companies.
I am glad I posted here & I have enjoyed reading the various things out there to be said! Great information!AZ CATS Thanks this. -

I think a lot of it is the trucking industry is so flooded with newbies that they can afford to be picky now. For some reason everyone that got laid off of their regular job thinks that trucking wasn't affected so they have all applied to be truckers. It should start to level off soon though. Most of those guys are now realizing what trucking is really like! Another good thing is maybe they replaced some of their idiot drivers!

Have you looked at Schnieder? I have a brother that works for them and he is on one of their dedicated accounts. Gets home a couple times during the week and weekends. He has 5 yrs exp. but had a 1-2 yr work gap where he was unemployed.
I looked a Swift a little and they have dedicated accounts also, most big companies do. If they have a terminal near you then there is a good chance they might run some dedicated in your area. You might have to be with them for a year or two to get on them but it might get him home more often.
I currently run dedicated for TMC and I know they have several different dedicated accounts, but don't know of any in your area. I also know they do a deep background check on your MVR. They found a suspension that I had almost 20 yrs ago. I had forgotten about it and didn't mention it on my application. They still hired me, but I had to fill out a form about how and why I got a suspension. I was a very fast pizza guy
Good luck on your search.katieadams Thanks this. -
That's exactly what is going on with Nursing right now! The random articles I have seen pushing those who were laid off towards the medical field get me really pissed! That job takes a certain person to do, like trucking, and to send someone that is nowhere near qualified or dedicated to what all it requires just blows my mind. People think it is a promised check because there will always be an opening but they dont realize everything they have to do to get there. There were people in my Anatomy classes that would be completed freaked out over dissecting cow eyes, sheep brains & hearts, and cats (including a pregnant cat). I couldn't believe it! If they cant handle that how are they gonna handle humans? I was 6 months pregnant doing this & held my composure a lot better than they did. It takes a "special" person to do a career like trucking & medical and for people to just jump on the bandwagon because they think its steady income.....it just shows their ignorance! -
LOL well where were you when we needed pizza?! J/K He has looked into Schneider and the recruiter was a great help! She tried to get him pushed thru but the safety dept just wouldn't back down. He needs to wait until next year for when Schneider would consider his tickets from last year as fallen off. I loved what Schneider had to offer when he showed me their packet via email. SWIFT does have a terminal about 2 hours away from where we live so maybe he will get lucky and get a dedicated route once he puts some time in. He really wants to do OTR and "roam the roads" but I have a feeling that may change as he sees all the milestones he will miss in our son's life as well as our 7 year old. I will support him the best I can in this and will be working extra hard to document everything I can for him while he is out on the road.
He actually has a friend from the school he went to for CDL training and he is leaving out for TMC Orientation on Sept 26th. I would be worried to death if he went to TMC because I hear they are really strict on their rules while at Orientation. IE: "The Grass Rule" Seems like a huge gamble to go there knowing how many start out & how many finish....however that shows how dedicated they are at trying to get the best drivers. His friend is like 6'7" so that was a plus for him with TMC.
