I guess the moral to my last post about rates was STABILITY . I think it will be there no matter where rates tank down to ..
Need some Insight on my situation !!!

I thought you where going to Bills company? As far as stability with UPS? I think the only guys over there that have any kind of stability are union route drivers. Owner ops running from terminal to terminal will be the very first they let go when things get slow. And with the economy in the shape that its in who knows. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up they will be very busy when that time nears, here at Mercer we can haul exclusively for UPS in that time frame if we want to.
-
No I'm not going with Bill ..
-
Here's what I been told :
The union approved UPS to hire its own contractors exclusively leased to UPS . By doing this they will weed out outside carriers as they lease on more O/O and get more lanes assigned to the O/O division . The O/O division is non union but approved by the union ( if that makes since ) to pull the UPS lanes with no return legs and go round robin so to. Speak going term to term .
I think that this will be a good opportunity for me .. -
Go for it and the wife is on board. What more do you need? Lol. Seriously, stability is key.

I did call Mercer today just to see what they were about .. Spoke to GW in recruiting very nice guy and very helpful . Told me all the ends and outs of Mercer - Trailers - Equip - Training etc . I told hhim I was Looking at UPS and was leaning that way .. We talked about Mercer pulling UPS stuff when it gets slow on flats etc ... We looked at a few loads on the phone well he looked and told me about it .
We talked about expenses
Trailer $600.00
Equipment $ 3250.00
plate $ 2150.00
trailer ins 2.5 % ( I think )
Escrow
trailer balloon
The 2500.00 bonus is paid out over 10 months at 500 up front then 200 a month afterwards
Then we spoke about UPS and the terminal to terminal stuff and how they pull for them too and he basically told me in not so many words .. We will train you flats , We would love to have you but not sure we can beat what they offer as far as Miles and money - said some weeks we can - some weeks we can't .. UPS is offering a good deal to you he said ..
Again very nice folks .. Great conversation .. -
I've done the O/O thing with UPS years ago, good steady work. Did Chicago/Meadowlands 3 times a week, toll road almost the entire way, which you needed to run to make the delivery time. If you can handle the monotony it sounds like it might work for you if nothing else but to get your financial situation healthy. As mentioned before, it's not a guarantee UPS will keep you when things slow down.
Do Not, expect any love from the union linehaul guys, one jerk dropped his set right in front of my truck when I was inside getting my paperwork signed. And yes, it was intentional. BTW, Mercer O/O 20 yrs. -
Mercer - was awesome to talk to but he was honest with me up front which I appreciated . It will cost me some upfront money to go to mercer if I choose to but like he said .
" I don't know if you'd be any better off with what UPS is offering "
" the best thing I can tell you is we offer you the ability to go home when you want and pick your
lanes "
Ive got the $ 1,600 they want to get started but I think I'll put it on the back burner for now cause with a perfect CSA / PSP ( in today's trucking matrix ) I can write my own destiny just as long as you keep it clean ..
But I can not say a bad word about mercer at all . The man shot me strait and told me the truth . That's hard to get out of recruiters today that's for sure . he said my avg rate would be around 1.60-1.70 and I micro managed that down some after I figure the ..Trailer - plate - trailer ins - trailer escrow - etc ...
I will say this :
If I were debt free or a 1,500 less expenditure a month it sounds like a great deal at Mercer .. -
I've spoke to a few guys at UPS and I got to clarify I'm speaking of UPS Freight and not UPS Ground
the freight side is the old Over Nite ..
Just wanted to clarify I am speaking in reference to UPS Freight -
Don't think this way. After you make your final truck payment, your truck should still be earning itself truck payments that now becomes money in your pocket. After a truck is paid for does NOT mean payment should be factored out of the equation. Eventually you will need a new truck. Are you going to go back to your customer and say "I need more money for the next 4 years because I have payments. Then I will lower rates again."
