For anyone looking at Texas patch work, a lot of people just get burnt out and quit. It's hard work, long hours and in the south not much for housing or entertainment. If you have a family, plan on not seeing them much. A lot of companies slowed down over Feb through March. Not because of weather, but to slow production to bring the price if crude back up. Some companies have long term contracts for hauling, some do short fill in work when they can. Do your research before packin everything up and moving down. South of San Antonio is sparse for housing but it's only an hour south to get into the patch and depending where your work is there might be housing or not. RV spots are plentiful and prices vary. Personally I live in SA, it's a collage and military town so apartment rents are high, but townhomes and houses are cheaper. I rent a 4bd 3 bath house with a pool in a gated community for 875 plus utilities. Large back yard that a guy comes to mow and fiddle over every 2 weeks. It was cheaper than an apt and I live alone. More things to do here than down south in Pleasanton or Three Rivers etc. Sea World, Six Flags, really good restaurants, personally I ride my bike in the hill country when I'm off to relax.

I'm working out of Stockdale driving for Stevens tanker. Living out if an rv park that rents campers. Found one cheap, cheaper than the cabins or lodges they have here in town. I know a lot of guys commute from San Antonio.
The paper Wilson County news has a whole section in the classifieds dedicated to truck driving jobs. Lots of work to be had for employable drivers who are ready and willing to relocate.

I live I the north west side of town, loop 1604 and hwy 281 area. You will need to just come down and rent a car and look around. East and south side is the rougher sides of SA. But like all large cities, there are pockets of really decent neighborhoods. The west side is more expensive and so is north because of all the collages and hospitals. Just east and north is some really nice small towns, but a longer commute. There is a lot of guys who just live in a rv or cabin while working and commute back home when off. There are realtor companies here that all they do is find you an apartment, apartment finder, etc. realtors usually have houses for rent too. Stay away from craigslist as there have been a lot of scams there. Use it to find the apt hunters and lease companies.

I just finished working the North Dakota oilfields for 6 months - driving tankers, buying and selling oil. Are there decent paying jobs for someone who has oil hauling experience? I am back in my owner op truck driving OTR, but might be interested in putting a driver in this truck and going back to work in the oil field again.
