If you log 5 hours you will set off all kind of red flags. Your company log dept will look at your log book with a microscope and so will DOT. If I had to kill 5 hours it would be on line 1 not 2.

If you log sleeper part of those 5 hours it would not stop the 14 hour clock but it would reduce your on duty hours for the day and not count towards your 70 hours in 8 days .
You could not log off duty unless you took a lunch break or they told you it would be a certain amount of time and you left for that time .
My carrier is very strict on HOS and we can log off duty while a truck is unloaded if we leave the truck with the keys in it and someone is there that can move the truck in case of emergency .

About the 34 hr reset or restart: Example , if I only have lets say 50 hrs after 8 days do you stiill have to do the 34 hr restsrt? Another example, how if your 8 day week started on Monday and its now wednesday and I have been sitting wednesday and thursday would I just do a restart so I dont have to worry about taking it later in the week?

No, but anytime you can get a restart it is to your advantage. You don't even have to do a restart. You can run off 8th day gain, but that can be confusing to some. You count back what you did on lines 3 and 4; 8 days ago and after midnight you can gain what you did 8 days ago.

This part kind of confused me.

Do you keep a recap record ? Many logbooks have a recap form inside the cover . Our company logs have them on every page . It shows how many hours you've worked in the past 7 days and how many hours you have available the next day .

If anyone wants some sample log sheets to play with:

google search "j.j. keller forms" and go to their website

then select "logs" in the category block to the right of the page

and select a form type, "Driver's Daily Log" the most basic is the 601-L

these will print in pdf (adobe acrobat) format
