So if you thought we were done, were not LOL!
In 2008 there was a great book written called The Legend of Conway

I am going to review some of that book because it's post CF. The book The Legend of Conway is more of a coffee table book, beautiful pictures all in full color. Much easier to read then Never Stand Still a lot of the book is part of Never Stand Still especially how Conway rose out of CF, but easier to read, beautiful color pictures of Conway system over the years old advertisements and everything a lot faster and easier to read big print all that stuff. Really nice book so look for that soon in the epilogue.

My personal life has been busy jam packed Holiday stuff all good things, but you know parties to go to and family and friend type deals. But I'll get stuff up because as they say "Only the busy find the time."

As you all know CF had a lot of width and depth. While Old Dominion is hot right now and we have a book report to do on them. Old Dominion doesn't have the width and depth of CF. However, CF and there companies came out in a different time period.

Sometimes I think back to the days of the regional carriers and the 1990s and I think boy if only I was older it would have been something to be working back then with all those colorful carriers like the TNT companies and the regional Con-Ways and all the others.

I always wondered how Hoffa Sr. would have handled the post deregulation atmosphere? The reading I've done about his leadership style revealed that contrary to popular belief he was very sensitive to the companies business conditions, and would force work rule and pay changes that were often unpopular with the rank and file to help the companies out as he felt necessary. Hoffa Sr ruled the Teamsters with a iron fist. After his legal troubles and ouster the policies inside the union leadership changed dramatically, in favor of a more democratic system.

If it wasn't for YRC's lenders agreeing to restructure their debt during and after the recession of 2008 they probably wouldn't be in business now.

Self driving truck technology will be the next big game changer, it will transform the industry in ways I can't imagine. I wonder if the current trucking companies can evolve with this new technology or will new trucking entrants like Uber and others dominate the future?

I was always curious about this book so I really appreciate your time and effort putting this project together, I'm sure it wasn't easy. The CF story is kind of like watching a rerun of the movie Old Yeller, even though you've seen it many times it still makes you sad. In a capitalistic free market system businesses never stay the same for long.

I think here in the LTL section.
I'm not an OTR driver so I don't hang out around there sections.
I am a city route driver/utility man for a broadline food service company.

Epilogue According to Never Stand Still Copy Right 1999 CNF (now defunct) publications.

In 1996 CF Motor Freight was spun off because CF Management couldn't fix it fast enough and make a billion dollars at it so they just decided to trash the whole thing.

CF Management was tired of the union and they were tired of Ron Carey running his mouth and Carey was ousted as the National Teamsters Union President in 1998 some political dealings with the Clinton's and what ever it was, he was gone. But CF Management was all hot for the Con-Way's and Menlo Logistics and even that stupid Emery Air Freight which will get to in a minute, but they were down on CF Motor Freight.

However CF Motor Freight did manage in the end of 1996 to turn a small profit of $400,000. Which I guess wasn't good enough for the parent company CF Inc.

Moffitt said that CF there oldest child was sick very ill and needed help.

So they got so they took Curry and made him CEO of CF Motor Freight. Changed the name to CFC and spun the company off. And will go over what happened to CF Motor Freight in better detail after they were spun off because it is in the book The Legend of Conway.

Donald Moffitt was getting older he was in his 60s by the way he would be in his mid 80s right now. I think he might still be alive.

Anyhow Moffitt became the president of the new CNF Corporation.

However Moffitt was getting old and the board of CNF wanted him gone so they told him to start looking for his replacement.

After that the book dives into what a great company CNF is and how Menlo Logistics (gone), Emery Air Freight (gone) and Con-way (also gone) were going to be the company of the future headed into the 21st century.

It's funny how these dated books are because all those things are gone. What's funny is for as great as CNF said they were, they only lasted 9 years. 2006 was the year the regional merged.

Emery Air Freight finally collapsed in 2001 that company did make CF Inc and later CNF some money, but it also cost them a lot of time and money too and over all the book can spin it anyway it wants, but Emery Air Freight was kind of a bust. The problem with Emery Air Freight was the fact that CF was a trucking company not an air freight company and they will never admit this, but while Emery did have some profitable years it also had some very bad years and it had more bad years then good years and was more of a loser then a winner.

The bottom line with Emery was and they will never admit this, but CF Inc bit off more then they could chew with Emery Air Freight. Larry Scott had visions of grandeur, but while he was in the right place mentally the company wasn't there financially which is everything and Larry Scott was writing checks CF Inc couldn't cash. Larry Scott was the top operations man at CF, but while his vision was correct Emery Air Freight was to much for them.

CF did much better on it's trucking and logistics then it ever did on air freight, but they wanted to be world wide.

Now CNF did better then Roadways parent company Caliber Systems which took a beating on Viking, Spartan and some other company. The only Roadway Caliber Systems company that did okay was the company my dad worked for in the 1990s known as Roadway Package Service or RPS.

Other then that Caliber Systems was pretty crappy.

Yellow's regional carrier Preston folded in 1999 and so in 1999 Conway Transportation Services was king of the mountain. However Conway Transportation Services reign was short lived.
