I have never had a CB, but my current employer will install whatever CB I buy. I would like one, but at the same time I am wondering if they are dead/worth buying? I would like to talk to drivers near by (obviously) but weather bands would also be handy in the Pacific NW... I don't know anything about CB's so please direct me to any useful information, and please be gentle...
Thank you.

Get a Cobra 29, or Uniden equivalent, with the weather band. Before you talk on it, take it to CB shop and have the SWR checked, or let a knowledgable person with a meter check it. Don't rely on the built in meter. It's okay to use as a reference, but check the SWR with a good meter first before transmitting on the radio. I would not let the CB shop take the covers off the radio and do a "peak and tune"!!!!! There are a few techs out there that I would let tweak it, but unless you know for sure, you are better off to keep them out of it...... I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY TELL YOU OR PROMISE THEY CAN DO!!!!

Absolutely worth buying. Whether it's late night entertainment, knowing what the scale up ahead is doing, or trying to find out the weather 200miles down the road. Just prepare for some BS. Can't go wrong with a Cobra 29 or Uniden 78. I personally swear by the galaxy 959 because they get GREAT reception and clarity.

Definitely follow Mike's advice regarding CB shops.
A few shops that will do walk-in work, and WON'T butcher your radio, in no particular order:
DTB Radio, I-81 exit 52, Carlisle, PA - back of the Sunoco by the Quality Inn
Q5 Communications, I-90 exit 132, De Forest (Madison) WI - upstairs in the Truckers' Inn Travel Plaza (Also called the Pine Cone, though that's only the name of the restaurant)
Ray's CB Shop, West Memphis, AR - across from the McDonald's, next to the Petro
Rodehog Communications, Harrison, AR, truck stop at the junction of US 65 and US 412
Circuit Master CB Shop, I-80 exit 142, Altoona (Des Moines) IA - in the Flying Jmike5511 Thanks this. -
It's okay to have it on while driving down the interstate.. Off at truckstops unless you want to argue with a truck stop diva

I bought the most basic of CB's cause all i really wanted to do was listen to what was happening on the road and use it for Receivals warehouse to call us onto the dock. some folks seem to spend all day talking on the CB blocking those that perhaps really need to use it, instead of switching to another channel.
