My husband worked for a small company as a car hauler for 20 years but just started working for Smith Transport out of Roaring Springs in hope his pay checks would look better. The DTR packs are a pain considering he never had to do those before, and from what we understand if you dont put it down you dont get payed for it. also if you don't ask about the "extras" you don't get any "extras".. So what we need to fined out is:
    1. what exactly is considered a layover?
    2. what is an additional stop?
    3. what is and when can you expect detention pay?
    4. what is tailgate pay?
5 what is short haul pay?
Sorry if these ?'s are "silly" but we just never have done this before and would sure like some help figuring it all out. :dontknow:

Layover varies, usually starts about 24 hours after he gets empty. Add'l stop pay, add'l stops pay usually $10 each, not including the last one, as in a 4 stop load. Detention pay, usually starts after the 2nd or 3rd hour past your appointment time. Tailgate pay means the driver gets the freight to the rear of the trailer and the consignee gets it off. Usually done at receivers without a dock. Short haul pay means a bonus to the driver since it 's only going a 'short haul', as opposed to a 1000 mi run.

Layover pay is anywhere from $40.00 and up...depends on the company. Layover is if you have not been "dispatched" from the time of your last delivery then within 24 hours. They can "catch" you by dispatching you on a load at the 23.5 hour mark.
Many companies consider the initial p/u and the final delivery as "free". Any additional p/u's or delivery between first and final is considered additional stop...and $10.00 or more is standard...again depends on company.
The standard these days is after 2 - 4 hours...the driver goes on detention and the rate is set by the company. $12.00 and up are common. Generally the company has an agreed price with the shippers/receivers....check with your company at their rate and limitations. Some only pay up to 8 hours detention....so check!
Tailgating is where the driver (with pallet jack) moves freight to the tail of the trailer and shipper/receiver take it on/off with forklift from the tail of the trailer.
Don't confuse this with "Driver unload"...Driver unload is the driver gets the freight off the trailer and completes a pallet breakdown, or just pallets off to the warehouse. Lumper services charge from $60.00 to an unheard of rate of $450.00 to off load and break down the pallets....check with your company on driver unload rates. Also, check with company on their "lumper policy"...usually you will have to get the lumper charges then call them into the company for authorization and the company gets you the authorization code for the payment with either comcheck or T-check. You can get blank com-checks or T-checks from Pilot and other truck stops...just ask at the fuel desk.
Some companies have sliding scales for length of haul....0-100 miles/100-250 miles/250-400miles....so on and so on....check with your company on what they consider a "short haul" and how you get an authorization code or number for getting the difference in pay and what the pay should be.
No question is "silly" if the answer is not known. And the only way to find out is to ask.

There are many here on TTR who are glad to offer advice and help you when you need it....just ask!:biggrin_25514:

yall are just great!!! we sure send yall much thanks for the info!!
our layover pay is $96, additional stop pay is 20 after the first 30 for the 2nd and 40 for the fourth.. detention pay is 12 an hour after 2, and the recruiter told us that any miles under 100 would have .25 added to his already .35 making it .60 per mile or a minimum of $35.. soooo today we get the first paycheck stub in the mail... we fined out that the .35 per mile is only zip code to zip code.. what sort of mess is that???? do all trucking company's go by this?? also the short haul pay.. pfffff.. i guess its only if you are loaded.. he has 4 runs that came out $7, $18, $10,and $23.. they only gave him the .35 not the .60 go figure.. we cant complain to much the check was better than the one he was getting.. its just the fact its soooo much time gone from home.. I miss my husband..LOL..

You need to check on "local pay"....those little trips you mentioned....try and see if they will pay a local hourly rate when he is doing THEM a favor by eating up his log with no miles to compensate!

OK, payroll dept's are sometimes really bad about screwing up the driver's pay. So make copies of anything you send them. Also, there will be times that the driver has to request any add'l pay, like layover etc. Unless he requests it, they won't AUTOMATICALLY just pay it. And zip-zip is normal in the industry.
