Oh, I don't know.
"Careering" down the road, barely in control with a big grin on one's face.
Sound familiar? -
Depends...
In any line of work, there are just folks that that mindlessly plug-away at things, and there are folks that work hard to achieve, and strive to learn and grow.
Every sucessfull O/O had to start somewhere!! Being a company driver is a good low risk way to gain experance, and most importantly learn. If the O/P has a good bussiness sense, in 2 or 3 years, it might be time to buy a truck and lease-on as an leasese....notice I said BUY, not lease (look around at fleasese deals...) and in a few years...do not get bullied into getting a lease...many educated folks have tried and failed...many leases are structured to guarantee a failure, or very slight profit...not comsurent with the loss of benefits or risk though IMO...notezbngrn71 Thanks this. -
I'll be at USA Truck and I won't be leasing any trucks. My plan is to do my year as contracted for them to pay for my school and then seek another company. Hopefully a regional or dedicated job. There is also a possibility that my uncle may sell me his company in a couple years.

That IS the last time I trust a definintion of a word !!!!!

Like I said, I wish you Good Luck !!! -
You have no idea what you are getting yourself in to... if you make it your first year you will be one of a few who make it... lotsa luck.

Well thanks for the words of encouragement...I think. I'm very aware of what I'm getting myself into and have heard the pros and cons from family and friends.
Every job has its good and bad. Its how you learn to embrace the good with the bad that makes the difference.sky king Thanks this. -
Well best of luck to you in the venture. You will only get a bunch of haters on here telling you bad crap. I commend you for being able to get it done. I myself went the other way from many years driving and being told where to go I now tell others where to go.Am really starting to miss the truck though and maybe if economy gets better will go back local one day.Good luck am keep us updated.

Well you seem to have a pretty positive outlook on the game! Just remember to keep that game face going for the next three months. These are going to be the hardest. After about three months you will be somewhat used to what's going on and you will be a little comfortable with driving and directions and such. You are doomed for defeat though if you are going into this thinking that you are just doing a year and then going to switch companies. I haven't quite understood this backward way of thinking yet! Why not go with a company that you like and are going to stay with now? Don't listen to these other bafoons! Job hopping goes on your DAC report. Then you will surely be banned from any good company! Most drivers go this route because they are lazy and don't want to put forth the effort of getting hired on with a good company. Yes it takes time and a lot more effort then just signing up with the mega-carriers. I don't think USA is a bad company but if you do or if you have plans to quit in a year then it is quite senseless to go there now! If you have a decent MVR with no criminal history, aren't a moron, and have the know how to put together a resume then you should have your pick of companies. I did it from the get go and had a bad MVR. I was also only 21. I don't think you should have a problem at all. Now if you can't do that then you are the negative person. (I mean that in a good way, sometimes my pep talks sound harsh!) Well you haven't left yet so if you have doubts then don't go. If you really like this company and think you will do well there and make a "career" of it as you were wanting then get on the bus (I would have rented a car but thats just me) Either way you go, good luck to you!

The comment about the year with USA is really only in reference to the fact that they paid for my CDL training and I must complete a year with them to fulfill my obligation. They seem like a good company, but I'm open to all the possibilities out there for my future.
I have a clean MVR and no criminal history. I have a very strong work ethic from a very early age. Grew up on a farm and family owned a grain elevator. I also spent some time in the Navy as a Missile Technician before entering the corporate world where I had been for the last 15 years.
This decision was not taken lightly and took me almost a full year to make. I look forward to working hard and putting on the miles to someday be a member of the Million Milers Club.
Thanks for the advice and words of encouragement!chompi Thanks this.
