Seems like that's more to do with the "regulation nation" at large, coupled with the misplaced mentality most auto-drivers feel towards truckers overall. They'll never understand what we deal with, having never been there. It's real convenient for them to push laws on truckers that hogtie our hands and feet while they continue doing 15-30 over the posted limits while eating their food in one hand while continuing to text with the other.
Meh, look at me. I've barely got my CDL in hand and already know the angst of dealing with the "lemmings" out there. Ahh well.... I'm a big boy now. ; ) -
@russtrucker: Negatory. I won't even consider O/O until I get some time on the road under my belt; gotta learn how things work first. But I appreciate the thought; maybe one day.

Speaking as someone who has never worked for the three companies you listed in your OP, those three have some of the lowest levels of respect that I have heard on here. It is my personal view to stay away from them. However, if you do work for them it is your duty to make the company a better place. Stevens has seemed to have worked on their reputation. 5 years ago folks on here were ready to march on Dallas and drive them out of town.
As to the Regulations, I am speaking as a politician. Most of the folks feel they have to do something to justify their pay checks. I would close every agency in Washington, DC and replace them with just one. The Department of Problem Solving. All problems would be sent to them. If they can solve it, they are fired.
It is the same in any business. Go into a grocery store in any city in the US. If they have hired a new manager, everything has been moved and you have to figure out where they moved it to again. Your trucking terminal gets a new manager, all new rules. Nobody seems to understand that the old guy got promoted because he knew how it should be run.
Make a choice from Chinatown list. Anyone that ugly who can get a wife that good looking, knows what he is doing.xlsdraw, OzzyOKC, VanHorne and 1 other person Thank this. -

The fact of the matter is that trucking is not about having fun. I can see a lot of old timers saying that "there ain't no fun about trucking anymore". Yes, indeed! - why? Because of all the federal regulations that seems not to care if the groceries get to the people's store or not, and the government seems to care just about money. And so, I don't know how the old timers Drivers, with all respect to them, had so much fun back on the days, unless just looking to the dangerous side of it, which was or it is, braking the safety procedures of being a safer driver.
Now, why all these big companies don't give a crap about the drivers? Because they're big, they have thousands of trucks, which give them room to play with numbers. Yes, what kinda numbers? MONEY, and DRIVERS. How they play with money? - they can bid on freight prices lowing the price as low as they can, because, say a company that has 1000 truck if they have a profit of $100.00 on each truck a day(which I guarantee it's much more than that) that would be $100,000.00 profit in one day. So they make a lot of money playing the numbers. And with the drivers, they play hiring low wages-students kinda drivers to whom they don't care about anything, putting them in kinda crapy loads, and if they screw up, they can be fired and they have a big line of newer fresh meat, outside waiting to be hired. Am I against the new driver? NO, and NO! I consider myself a new driver as well... But the rules should be changed about of the acts of these big companies. They should be audited more often by authorities or private audit companies that would uncover all their duty rip off measures and activities against the drivers, which by doing so would benefit the new drivers.
Now, you have be really careful to whom you're gonna work. Search their name, read all you can about them and let God guide you my friend. Good luck, and may The Lord bless you.VanHorne Thanks this. -
I do appreciate all the support and feedback, everyone. Thank you. To kind of wrapup the bit from the OP, TransAm has been flatly dropped off the radar screen. In fact, they've been dropped off by the curb many miles back. TransAm, from what I've been seeing about them on Indeed.com, Glassdoor.com, and here? I doubt any sane person would touch them with a twelve-foot cattle prod. When people are putting efforts forth across multiple states to start a class-action suit against them for their practices, .... uhm, yeeeaaahh.... they may have nice shiny new trucks, but what are they hiding in the closet?
Stevens seems to have a looming dark cloud over them as well, though nowhere near as bad as TA. To top that off, their nearest terminal to me is Dallas - quite a ways away from central Florida. I'll pass.
Werner doesn't seem to be quite so overshadowed and their people have been the only ones out of all my applications that have called regularly, just to check up on me and wish me well through school. I was very impressed in that they even called me the first morning of our final exams to wish me well on that - nothing else! They are also rather local to me in comparison to many others. Lakeland isn't that far away from Ocala, so it's a good fit for me. They also promise that after the initial training program, options will likely be available that would keep me closer to home, which is a huge plus for someone who's spent every day of his working life coming home every night. (This transition will be a very hard one for me)
Swift Trans., likewise is VERY local to me, having a near-full-service terminal right in Ocala. I worked there with the in-house fleet maintenance team as a tire dept. lead man and PM assistant, for a time, so the place is still familiar to me. Who knows? I might even see a few familiar faces if I'm lucky.
At this time, I think I'm leaning more toward Swift, because of their proximity and past familiarity. Between them and Werner, both offer similar incentive packages for new drivers, so it's really coming down to locale and the chance for more locally designated running in the future so as to offer a bit more balanced hometime. At least, that's the ultimate goal within a few years.
Thanks for the input everyone! I'm looking forward to getting out there and maybe even crossing paths with a few of you. -
I am currently with Werner.. I just finshed my training and tomorrow will be assigned my truck.. I had some experience before coming to Werner.. at first I tried to avoid the mega carries believing them to be bad.. got on with a small family owned company, with a nice Peterbilt, that was not governed and had a pitsburg powerbox.. they paid .42 cpm.. soi, I though I was off to a good start.. only, they could not keep me running, so 42cpm waiting for loads adds up to nothing, also they did not and could not keep their equiptment running well.. they were a small company and had to pinch pennies where they could.,. so bald tires, paper logs, and running around scales was the norm...
Anyway, during all my time at truck stops waiting for loads, I would see Werner trucks, CRST trucks, Schniders and many others rolling in and out .. i started to talk to the drivers and found that Werner had many drivers whoi were happy and been with them for years..
So, I came to Werner.. and I am glad I did.. Werner has delievered and even over delivered on all that was promised by the recruiter.. When I was out with my first trainer they kept us rolling, and when her and I had personality conflicts werner got me off the truck and onto another in short time, it was like 36 hours.. so no complaints there... With my second trainer Werner again kept us rolling..
I have already gotten on a dedicated account, which I will start as soon as i get my truck, deliver my first load and have some home time.. where I get to take my truck home and get it set up..
Now, it is true, the trucks only go 65mph.. but, I would rather be rolling in a truck that onloy goes 65mph than parked waiting for a load in a truck that can go 90 mph...
I also do like the Ez pass, Pre Pass that werner has.. Having just drove through Il and IN with toll booth after toll booth it was nice to not have to pay and wait for reinbursement like I did with the smaller company..
My Benifits will start shortly, health, vision, dental.. and, there are also other benefits.. like discounts with certain cell phone companies.. I get a 10% with my current carrier..
I am pleased that I came to Werner.. and I know a lot of drivers out there have something against werner and other big companies.. but, I really don't care.. It is going well for me and that is what I care about.VanHorne Thanks this. -
Thanks, 883BedomRider. They are the razor-close second-choice to Swift for me. If things start smelling foul there, I plan to be on the phone with Werner post-haste. I'll take your testimony under strong advisement.

You do need to understand that anything that is Southeast Regional or Local with a Large company Will be low pay. If you haven't ruled out OTR, consider Conway Truckload. You would make much more than at Swift or Werner.
VanHorne Thanks this.
