Understood. You are debt free, clear on your house etc, just like we were. You will want to have around a thousand dollars stake in your pocket to start when hired so you don't ever borrow money from the company comchecks, going into debt with no cash is a real problem in the industry.
As far as Memphis, it is the number two in trucking, number one in air freight (Fex Ex etc) and number three in rail. Look around carefully that city. You will have trucking coming out of your EARS of all kinds.
If you ever stop in TA jackson, (Denmark) make sure you park always in that gravel lot across the street from the graves and the front pumps of the building. You don't ever want to go back down the hollow around back day or night. It's a nice stop but Ive had two cases of crime there, one of which came close to home defense by knife inside my cab against a rapist after my spouse who did not listen to me teaching her to park on the gravel lot. She knows now.
As far as everything else. All of that will come in time. A year on a company on the road is plenty. The Internet is not large enough to tell you all the ins and out. You will have to enjoy the discovery as you go.

Don't worry about that ignorance, I have a lot of that too. See where that gets me? lol.
Anyhow.
Im out of Little Rock. These last 20 years. Maryland was my home and NYC hunts point was my stomping grounds in trucking. Not the very best start in those days back in the 80's but... eh. Arkansas is good to me.
You can go home I guess once a week for a few days by explaining your SN's to McKesson or another employer, it would be better to be local or regional. Be home weekly. Or daily.
There is another catch to being home. You will want to set aside a room, a small one and teach your family that your sleep cycles are disrupted and you need about half a day to decompress and be decent to your family after however long it takes you to be right again coming in your front door away from the truck. There are forum posts about this type of behavior issue. It's hard to explain. Sleep is the biggest challenge flipping day to night or vice versa back to home time day.
Memphis is my opus, but it is also a place where I get predatory because there are so many there along US79 that will slit my throat just because. But don't let that bother you. It's not worth me getting into my own problems there. McKesson was the best as far as I was concerned. That thousand per week net was pretty nice gravy too.Claysapparel Thanks this. -
Jackson is a dangerous place. A lot of the crime from Memphis has spilled over. I'm a second amendment nut and own many firearms. Truck drivers should have no stipulations on carrying. We really need to de-regulate the laws for you guys.
Thanks for all the help it's very much appreciated. -
That bad?
I guess I should strike that place from my top ten of home stops then. Or pull up my straps and keep visiting there. Maybe I don't know better but I remember how the staff took care of us with good food, more than you can eat for the money and decent fuel over most of my life. -
Jackson has great people, but thugs are really coming in. Most people originally from the area have moved to the neighboring county madina. For a city / town of around 60,000 (can't remember the exact amount), it can be dangerous in some areas. Probably not unlike other places.
When I'm in Jackson I carry a truck takedown AR-15, and a Glock .40 on the hip. Well, actually, I carry them everywhere I'm allowed so, maybe it's my paranoia.
Although, as the coach of my favorite team always says (calipari, Kentucky), it's not paranoia if they're really after you.

Look into Roehl, they have 4/4 accounts....

Well, Ive seen that over and over in life. THugs move in, people move out to a quieter place.
Where I am there is maybe a few thousand, kind of hard to be a thug here. If they did try and infest our town, we will relocate to literally a smaller quieter town deeper into the Ozarks. They don't cotton to thuggies there.
I think Im done here. You got a little bit of learning today, and a bit to go. Trucking is a wonderful trade, but it's what you make of it. Literally you decide how far you get to go once you get into the industry. I don't mean climbing the ladder to be CEO or anything like that but rather making sure you don't allow your truck to touch anyone or worse, kill someone.Claysapparel Thanks this. -
Please don't settle for $5-600 a week, that's part of the problem in trucking these days. Even as a new driver you can find more money.
Tanker, flatbed, ltl or line haul will be in the upper pay scale and home dailyTequilaSunrise and Claysapparel Thank this. -
Check with Big G express out of Tennessee
Claysapparel Thanks this. -
Wasn't intending to be disrepectful to the profession. I'll take what you're offering into consideration. I've never thought of it like that, and I'm sure it plays a part in driving down wages.x1Heavy and slim shady Thank this.
