Just over a week left of CDL school and then I will take the test after that. I may take manual but I am leaning towards taking on automatic as I need a job and don't want to take the chance of not passing as I am not perfect on the manual. I made a previous post about trying trucking and possibly leaving for another job and got some great responses. I'm all in on driving now. I am starting to look at companies. I'm interested in regional or OTR. I know the first year pay is not great but looking for the best I can get out of the gate. I don't care what type of job I get. I do have a year experience loading and unloading flat bed trailers as part of a previous job. I mention that if it helps but again I don't care what I do. I was in construction for 15 years. I'm 46. I have a TWIC card and a passport. I have the OSHA 10 and 30.100% clean driving record I have all the endorsement except Haz mat but I will probably get it soon. I have been looking on job sites for companies but it's hard to know which way to go. Any suggestions or input is appreciated. Thanks.

Tyson Foods is a good company to go with. Give them a shout and see if you are in their hiring area
austinmike and Pointblanka Thank this. -

Take the CDL test in the manual transmission tractor.
Instructors know & understand that this soon into the game -- your shifting isn't going to be anything close to perfect.
Mine certainly was not -- & yet, I still passed the driving exam.
Then -- you won't have that pesky "auto restriction" on your CDL.

Your previous thread has some different fleet suggestions in it.
Some of them were/are very good suggestions.
If you still think your body is not up to real physical work -- think twice before starting out in flatbed duty.
Did any carriers visit your CDL school class?
If so -- who were they?
Did you not like them?

No companies have visited as yet. I'm going to give the shifting another week and see. My original question changed so I wondered would that change the suggested companies.ThanksLast edited: Aug 24, 2025
