    bulldog, just an idea...
if you have a laptop and another computer at home you can get web cames, and do video phone calls to eachother whenever you talk, to the wife and kids,
if you dont have a lap top, you can find them fairy cheap anymore, and i would into a internet card from one of the phone carriers, they run about 60bucks a month... or, all the truck stops are equiped with internet, you can pau hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly... either way...
that way you can see your kid(s) and wife and they can still see you each day..
best of luck you, and your family..

Hi Bulldog- I am a newbie driver wife-hubby has been driving just shy 4 months. It was a HUGE change to our lifestyle. He was gone for almost 6 wks to train (home one night 11 hrs only cuz his trainer who was doing a dedicated was scheduled near our home.) That was TOUGH! Hubby basically does the same dedicated run (for the most part) so he has been home most all weekends. This time he was out 2 weeks and actually just got home 11.30pm tonight off till Monday. The best help is the cell phone -we have Verizon talk to talk all you want which is a life saver. Some on here take laptops for emails etc for the ''routine things'' to keep in touch too. I also am learning to cook meals and freeze them for him to take so he is not eating so much crap food on the road or canned stuff. I work from home so our lifestyles could not be more opposite. ( no kids btw we're older) I think it just takes some time to get used to this lifestyle for you and your wife. Some nights it just plain bites to be here alone, but I am thankful hubby is working ( me too! for that matter) I agree with you that those in the industry should be nice to each other or at least the drivers but alas, it's not much different in my profession (RN) with the BS-think all jobs have BS. Have a good night
PS no $5 charge for me no whinning!! LOL!!
PSS Tell your wife to check out the Ladies room really great gals and guys on here! I wish I had found this web site last fall when hubby was in school some GREAT info for newbies we could have used. The people are a great support or just for a good laugh!!

Hi, Bulldog! I'm a newbie trucker wife too. My hubby is on his third week of training. He is home two days a week for right now. But I'm guessing that won't be the case once he complete his traineing. I'm appreciating the time I have with him....

It has been a pretty BIG adjustment for both of us. I miss him like crazy.

He has learned to pack lighter. Should have seen the monster suitcase he took his first week out?:biggrin_2559: He gets along with his trainer great. He takes a lot of snack foods with him to help keep food costs down. And I always make a homemade dessert for him to take. We keep in touch talking on our phones, emailing, and texting. Sometimes I only talk to him 2-3 times a week because he is driving when I'm sleeping, etc.
All in all we're both happy with his decision. He loves it and that is all that really matters to me. I can't wait to see if I can arrange to go out with for maybe a week or two.

    Hey Soon2be!
I actually had thought about that and when we can save up enough money we will buy two lap tops with webcams. We just renewed our Verizon contract and both got Blackberry Curves so that will help out a whole lot! And I acually think my blackberry has the capability to be a wifi hotspot. That's how I get on here and check everything is my data package on my blackberry. Thank you for the idea. I really appreciate it!

    Hey Sammycat!
Thanks for your awesome post! Like I was saying in my last post my wife and I just renewed our verizon contract and got blackberry curves so that will help a lot with phone calls and emails ect. And yeah its going to really take some getting used to but between family and friends and this site ( this thread ) I've got lots of strong support! And I know there are going to be times for both of us to be alone but she has our son and she has promised me that I can get a companion dog for the truck so it won't be quite so lonely and I'm really excited about that! Who is your husband working for? And I will get my wife signed up on here and tell her about you and the ladies room. Thanks again for all the info, advice and help.

Hello fellow newbies. I start with Watkins and Shepard on June 1. I finish trucking school next week on May 20. I look forward to learning all I need to know in the 10 day orientation and then hitting the road. I want to stay out for 6 weeks or so and then be home in August for some family things and moving my family to Utah. What a great few months.

This is a great idea, we have AT&T so I got an unlimited wireless card so we can use skype which is free to chat with my wife and kids. I also have my iPhone so communication should not be an issue

    Hey MC,
Yeah, I remember the bag I packed my first time too... lol! Well I know my decision is a good one and I will gain some experience and get a dedicated or local job through the company I'm going to be working for. I hope my wife can arrange for her parents to watch braedon for a couple weeks and come out with me on the truck considering I will be solo. I am so excited about being solo yet so nervous about it and also excited that I get to bring the truck home! Thanks a lot for your post MC!
