    Yes, that's a great point.

True... It's funny, Cobra was the originator of the proposal to allow FM on 11-meters in the U.S., but President was the first to roll out new FM capable products... Go figure

I am thinking cobra had issues that needed to be resolved that delayed them, plus for cobra, cb and consumer radios are a secondary revenue stream for them, they make more money on their branded crap then their actual cb and consumer radio streams so … priorities matter.

Yep and I was able to get one of the first Presidents made with FM four days before I got shot. The day after it arrived at my house I got shot. I still haven't opened the box.

I've got several old radios that have FM on the mode knob / switch. I know my General Lee and Galaxy DX 66V both do for sure, some of my others may as well.

Is there some difference in the way that radio and similar units transmit / receive an FM signal versus older units like the ones I mentioned?

No, the only difference would be what frequency the radio is designed to communicate on. The actual FM (frequency modulation) mode itself is the same. FM is more popular on VHF/UHF frequencies rather than on HF frequencies like the CB 11 meter band. Except for the folks in Europe, FM is their main mode for CB radios.

I think the deviation on the “export” radios is too wide for the new regs.

I hadn't thought about that. The export radios deviation is 5khz maximum, which is no surprise since they are really sold as a ham radio. I can't find anything on the CB radios.
