Per Wikipedia:Vetting is a process of examination and evaluation, generally referring to performing a background check on someone before offering him or her employment, conferring an award, etc. In addition, in intelligence gathering, assets are vetted to determine their usefulness.

Does SWIFT do this??? Good Lord you listed the above under "if things get severe",,it most undoubtely has occurred, hope these Mentors(oops back to Wiki)

Mentorship refers to a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps a less experienced or less knowledgeable person.
The person in receipt of mentorship may be referred to as a protégé (male), a protégée (female), an apprentice or, in recent years, a mentee.
"Mentoring" is a process that always involves communication and is relationship based, but its precise definition is elusive. One definition of the many that have been proposed, is
Mentoring is a process for the informal transmission of knowledge, social capital, and the psychosocial support perceived by the recipient as relevant to work, career, or professional development; mentoring entails informal communication, usually face-to-face and during a sustained period of time, between a person who is perceived to have greater relevant knowledge, wisdom, or experience (the mentor) and a person who is perceived to have less (the protégé)"

Now im not trying to pick a argument with you or slam you choice of employer,Im more curious more than anything does this actually go on?If anything that you mention happened over here, the"Finisher"(thats what we are called) are terms for termination, students are given a choice(no questions asked) if they are not comfortable at all during anytime during the training period they are out of the truck.

Apples&Oranges would apply here as no 2 companies train the same, but I would assume the vetting process for these trainer, finishers, mentors etc... would be the same (and we have had our fair share of bad ones also,so we are not immune)

InJun enjoy your posts,,not trying to slam you ,,like i said just curious,

STUDENTS:Just remember,no matter what company you plan to go to to train, your there to learn a skill,a trade,a mindset...

"Vetting" is done as carefully as they can. But regardless, bad apples still get through. Most of our mentors are decent folks who train new drivers as part of their jobs. Some are only in it for the money and some are in it for the perceived power. I wrote this initial post to let new people know they have an avenue of recourse. They are not stuck with a specific mentor.

Most new people are afraid to speak up against a training situation that isn't working out because they fear for their jobs. They think that they will be penalized in some way for wanting a different mentor. I posted this so that they know that won't happen.

I saw a post recently where a lady was being trained at Roehl. The trainer was a miserable excuse for a person and failed her for spite...after berating her for three days straight. There are procedures in place to address these situations at Swift.

We have been discussing a lawsuit going against Prime right now. One of the things someone said was "You place two people in a small space and something is eventually going to happen." We were talking about cross-gender training, but it can apply here too.

It's like any other cross section of society. When you gather up a thousand people, you will find some arsehats among them. When you get rid of one, another steps into his place.

Most of our students have a positive experience with their mentors. A few don't. I want those very few to know what to do if they feel uncomfortable with the situation.

Actually, where the term came from is from the Greek Mentos...he, in Greek mythology was the guide to Hercules...so a "Mentor" is actually a guide, one that has knowledge and imparts that knowledge onto one less knowledgeable about the given lesson.

I know you said you're "not trying to slam" Injun, but it sure sounds like it to me. You appear to work for a different company, so I'm not sure how much validity your "not slams" have at Swift. I'm going to probably raise the temperature here a notch or two with these examples and Injun sure doesn't need my help defending herself, but here goes:

Vetting: You ask, "Does SWIFT do this???" You bet. All employers "vet" candidates to one extent or another prior "to performing a background check on someone before offering him or her employment." Background checks are required in the trucking industry just like they are required in the aviation industry. Reference to "intelligence gathering" and "assets" is ludicrous; those do not exist in the trucking company.

Mentors: You wrote, "im not trying to pick a argument with you or slam you choice of employer,Im more curious more than anything does this actually go on?" Well, yes they do, as do all trucking companies. Mentors is what Swift calls their trainers. Your company, apparently Con-way, based on the photo you use, probably calls them something different. Who cares? The title a company uses for their experienced drivers (well, mostly!) who teach inexperienced drivers is not based on what Wikipedia says. The desired result is the same--a qualified, competent driver--no matter what special title they are given.

Using Wikipedia as the standard for anything is absurd. It is a notoriously unreliable source for anything other than general information. Their definitions are merely someone's opinion, they are not scientifically or grammatically valid and should not be used to judge any company's definitions.

Actually the "vetting" process at Swift for Mentors isn't very detailed....just a recommendation from the DM (of the prospective Mentor) attached to an agreement recommendation from the Fleet Manager and the Terminal Manager. Then the application/request goes to Phoenix/Memphis to the training department, they check miles run, on time performance, accident/incident history and the new "wanna-be" Mentor is routed to Phoenix/Memphis to attend the "Mentor Class"....1 1/2 days of video and #### chat...then the first student is assigned. BTW...you can't fail the Mentor Class!:biggrin_25525:

WHat is your problem? I asked INJUN these couple a questions and you want to go all "TROLL" ,you might want to be a actual driver ,or hey like a few of us on here,,,Trainers,Mentors,Finishers,, or like myself withover 1+ million miles(WITH THE SAME COMPANY,,I have no animosity with INJUN,SWIFT or any other carrier.Where ever you or anyone else wants to work well that your business and if it works for you well good for you

The reference to intelligence gathering: you might want to take a breath and read it like its written
"conferring a award",<notice the comma then etc .<Period(End of a sentence, thought) ANd thus starts a new sentence, thought,,,"In addition"IN INTELLIGENCE GATHERING"assets are VETTED to determine their usefulness
    Its a simple definition,thats all,,,JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ

And lastly Yes I drive for Conway,I hide nothing here,Like Injun and quite a few others we dont hide behind silly avatars and post basic info about us

The things she posted are the absolute worst case scenario's possible, not out of "The Possibilty of Happening" but if she has posted it (about her Company) I take it at face value that they have actually happened,to which it is sad, cause if they(SWIFT) had actually had VETTED these turds, then they would have not had these problems...

And NO!no 2 companies train NEWBS the same, they train NEWBS to fill a seat,,,to their standards whichever they may be

So Denalidad ,good luck with your future in trucking, you sound as if you got the hardest part down pat so far, complaining about something, without the knowledge of what your complaining about

    DenaliDad Thanks this.
