I tossed my 1 month old Rand McNally 7 inch and bought the Garmin 7 inch. I'm glad I did in preliminary usage and knew it right off the bat with a number of little things. The traffic on the Garmin is far superior to the RM AND you don't need a WiFi connection. It's cross-country routing makes more sense, and it's alerts are much more useful and informative. I like the auto-zoom better on the Garmin
I personally don't have much use for truck stop listings and other such POI's. I know where they are and have a smart phone if I'm in need of a tire shop but I like the way the Garmin will overlay them (what it is aware of) as an option to easily be turned on or off.
My biggest gripes with the Garmin Dezl 760 so far
- The cord is about 18 inches shorter then it needs to be for upper corner mounting
- Can't figure out how to display mile marker as the store display says it will -
To display next mile marker, bottom left side inner button which probably shows time to distanation or miles to distination or elevation. Click on that and scroll down to next mile marker. then save.
Now someone, pleasevtell me how to keep it from zooming in as I slow down. I zoom out as I'm getting off a ramp and it, zooms in.Ronin_on_MT and Skydivedavec Thank this. -
That RM will still make a nice back up unit just in case.
-
I like that feature myself and is one of the reasons I bailed on RM for Garmin (having had other auto Garmins in the past). As you're driving slower it will give you the opportunity to see more detail (streets) in case you have to make a quick set of blocks or need to see where a small street is. Time and distraction spent manually zooming in can be costly in some situations
The RM (in nav mode) zooms in too tight when approaching turns, to the point where you can't actually see the upcoming turn on the screen for reference. -
Thanks for the mile marker info. Now the next challenge is to figure out how to set a maximum speed to help with the accuracy of the ETA forecasts. My Canada legal truck can't keep pace with 70mph speed limits.
-
Theoretically, it's supposed to "learn" the speed you drive and adapt but I've never seen that happen.
-
I never understood why any of the GPS units didn't ask for a MAXIMUM speed so they could better determine ETA's from the git-go. But they do seem to figure out soon once on the interstate that the remainder of speed limits that exceed XXX will be at XXX and adjusts the ETA accordingly.
DsquareD Thanks this. -
Navigon, the German company bought by Garmin had the "set speed limit" feature, so I'm hoping that it will implemented soon.
-
when you think about it, they are probably doing the ETA calculation right the way they are. Just because a truck can run 75, and may sometimes run 75 in a 75, doesn't mean the driver will ALWAYS run 75 in a 75. So trying to gauge a "running average projection" is probably good, to account for different driver moods and changing road conditions (weather)
