The first job is always the hardest to land especially with all your baggage. The key to finding a job may be to apply as a team driver for a lease operator or owner operator. The wages will be low but the experience and knowledge gained will more than make up for the low pay.

Once you do find a job (and you may have to apply at 100 or more companies to get your foot in the door somewhere) be very careful. The pay you earn will probably be around 400 to 500 per week to start but remember it is a "start." The pay will go up over time provided you learn and don't tear up the equipment or have "accidents."

Another company to check out would be Prime. They seem to have a good training program but DO NOT AGREE TO ENTER the lease program.

    Good luck.

    PRIME inc

has issues with people being unemployed for more than 24 months

thanx for the support and encouragement guys

I went this morning and finished some paper work at a place and was told they are submitting my app to HR and as long as my BG check clears, I'm a GO!

I have no prob with the BG check. It's almost squeaky clean. Except the couple of bad check charges (all misdemeanors, under $300) I had like 15 yrs ago.

So, keeping my fingers crossed. Looks like I'll be driving a tanker with fracking sand.

    God willing...

If your still having trouble, just find a job driving a strait truck for a year. A trucking company would be more willing to hire when they see a year clean record and see you could keep a job for a year. You may need a refresher course, but there cheaper.

    Life is about perseverance.

I'm driving a tanker hauling cement.
    Just finished day 2.

A lot going on lately getting the family moved and getting stuff squared away for the job so that is the main reason I haven't given an update all along the way.

But, here I am. I guess I can finally say, I'm a truck driver? lol
So far I'm loving it. I was pulling a 79k lb tanker yesterday and it was totally different than pulling an empty drive van like I did at school.

I think I'm gonna like the job though.

    :)
    (yes, I really am smiling)

    Agreed..

You will find a spot somewhere drivin..

May not be with a big carrier..but they are out there. Look at smaller carriers that hire new drivers..they usually have a little more leeway..20-30 truck outfits up to about 200..

May not pay quit so well or may pay better than the big carriers, drawback..you will have to pay for your cdl yourself and they probably won't reiburse you for it..

Benefit..even being new you won't just be a truck number..

Drawback..may not have health benefits for drivers and you may have to alot for your own taxes each year depending on how small of an outfit..

Just like choosing any big carrier..choose carefully..talk to their drivers, look at the equipment..

Dude seriously, you've got a family. Go find a job being a dockworker, youll make pretty close to driver pay. And when you've had enough time since your DUI, then try to get behind the wheel. DO not sell your soul to the usual BFI outfits just to drive a truck. It aint worth it.

I've had my CDL since 07 and I got hired at conway with zero experience. Find out if your school does discounted refreshers.

Desperation makes a man do crazy things and I see it on here all the time.

Its spring time and most LTL's are hiring for the summer uptick in freight levels. Youll make decent money and be home to your wife and kids everyday. Screw that OTR nonsense. Just the thought of it repulses me

    Pffft....You aren't being harsh.. It's the truth!

Hell, I was unemployed for 2 months (one month of it was was while I was in CDL school), after a couple of weeks I was going so stir crazy I found myself working for free down at the local Habitat for Humanity till I started trucking school. ( I also wanted to set a good example for my kids )

I had several employers lined up and a job offer before I even graduated CDL school.

There is no excuse to be unemployed for that long. OP sounds like a perpetual victim, moocher and prone to making bad decisions, no wonder he is having such a hard time finding a job.

It's NOT hard to find a job. It's hard to find a GOOD job, maybe, sometimes, or a job you LIKE perhaps...but you take what you can get.

I bet if you where starving, you would find a job really fast! Starvation and poverty is a great motivator!

I'm glad you are trying to do something about it now, but you don't get my sympathy.

That being said...I wish you the best moving forward. Ya can't change your past, but you can change your future.
(it would help if you accepted responsibility for your past though..just sayin)

Oh..by the way, welcome to the forums!

Looks like a couple of you guys missed this post
    Thank you for your input.

    A wise man huh?
    Knows ALL truth.
In such a position to sit and judge some one and knows nothing about the person.
No excuse to be unemployed you say?
lol - where to begin? Should I begin with a political analysis? Of which, ones I had plenty of time to look into the why's and how's of this Countries current (and past, and future) economic and moral woes?
No. I won't. This is not the place for the such.

A mathmatical approach perhaps? Yes, lets do the math.
Having a family to support, meaning, a wife and 4 kids, in all of your purposed wisdom, you think it logical to ditch $500 a week in UE for $200 flipping burgers or a "take what I can get kinda job"? While we're doing the math, ask yourself how is it I came to make that UE figure in the first place. That means I made some money before both citizens (and illegals) and politicians contributed to the current status.
Also, for the record, in the last 4 months or so of my UE, I filled out approximately 100 aplications. You know what I saw on those ap's? Always several hundred job seekers vying for the same job I was.

Moocher? Not at all. Anyone that knows me would tell you I make my own way. Mooch off of a criminal Government? Well, I never really thought of it as much as mooching as much as I thought of it as "hush money".
Meaning, I don't waste my time talking to most people about how to fix something, and who to point the finger at. So, when I see The Criminals raping the American people I won't feel bad for taking chump change to take care of people that actually need it.

If you want to get pissed at your tax dollars being wasted perhaps being a bit more active in voicing your opinion to Washington would help.
Doubtful, but you could still try.
Also, you can thank people that live in a matrix where everything they have is financed through banks and credit.
I've bought ###### near everything I have owned with cash.
But at least I didn't support a usurous system as much as some.

Now, accepting responsibility. CERTAINLY. Where I am able. And I am able in several things that have contributed to "who I am". But certainly not all. Oh to be perfect and either never made a mistake or got caught making it like some would have people believe:biggrin_25514: would be fabulous. And to do it all again, with hind sight being 20/20, well...

So my wife looks over at me and says that we can't be a part of a forum ever because there are too many ##########.
I guess that would be logical since the same types that one would run into in the real world one would logically meet online as well.

But then again, I could just be getting picked on and acting like a perpetual victim.

Now, excuse me while I go mooch on a beer and sit back and smile knowing what's what and feed the rest fish heads ;)

    DannyB and U4EA Thank this.
