So sometime mid-year 2024, Indiana updated their CDL requirements making it a lot easier to pass. Just wondering if anyone has the points system for each section on this new version? I've found all the manuals and cheat sheets, but I can't find anything saying missing this gets you x points and you can only miss x points on this section

Need 22/32 points to pass pretrip. (Or something)

You can miss 10 points. Normally, they give you points for everything that you’re saying so as soon as you meet the minimum point requirement you should pass.

You also have a cheat sheet or checklist to go over everything so you shouldn’t be missing much of anything.

Skills is 8 points max. 9 is failing.
Be careful encroachments or doing more looks or pull-ups than allowed.

Not sure about road. You want as few points as possible. This should be easy if you are careful of the trailer, curbs, looking both ways, railroad tracks, safe speed, safe distance.

A school would tell you all this and what the examiners are looking for because you can’t get a CDL without some hours in the system.

if you mean written tests, it says on the screen itself what you need to pass. 16/20 usually.

    tscottme Thanks this.

Now the CDL tests are easier?

They need to make them a lot harder.

These tests are so simple, my 10-year-old read the CDL manual and passed the practice tests with no mistakes.

I’m sure you just have a genius. A lot of adults can’t do that. LOL

    Nope, the tests are easy.

This is supposed to be a profession, where people earn their money in a dangerous vocation, the test to get into the door should be hard, they should be very hard because other people's lives depend on us being safe and professional.

This change is the new standardized method.
Pretrip is 10 or less missed is passing. Not doing air brake test exactly as outlined in manual is an auto-fail.
During the skills portion, 8 or less points is passing. Careful though, missing the forward stop box at the beginning is 5 points. Add in an encroachment or more pull-ups equals fail. Missing final position (ending where you are supposed to) is 13 points.
Road portion passing score is 30 points or less for class A. Auto-fails include speeding, curbing, 2 or more encroachments of a stop line, missing a gear for more than length of the vehicle and any kind of accident or unsafe act regardless of fault. Points are awarded for failing to check traffic before, during, and after turns and intersections. Also checking turn signal use, following distance, hard braking, lugging engine, grinding gears, ect.

I understand that what I'm about to write may seem impractical or even unfeasible. Over the past few years, I've come to believe that obtaining a CDL shouldn't be achievable solely through schooling. Instead, a CDL should be earned through time spent under the mentorship of a driver with more than 10 years of experience.
