Do you know how expensive the Allison TC10 is? It is an intriguing tranny, but it seems to be a rare bird. Inquiring minds want to know why.
I want to say it was around 5k more than the manual through International, while an AMT was only a few hundred more than a manual.Im not sure why it’s marked up so much. It might be the truck makers’ doing to push you towards an AMT. Volvo and Mack do that if you try to get a manual instead of ishift. I think it’s perfect. Super fast shifts, no loss of power, excellent low speed maneuvering/backing, virtually indestructible, a true single over drive .86 top gear. The only drawback to it is that fuel mileage suffers at speeds over 63mph due to the resistance of the torque converter and fluid, that’s what the engineer people at Navistar said. For me, it’s perfect, for guys that want to go the speed limit, and AMT is probably better.
Have you driven one? Fuel mileage over 63 suffering is a new one to me - I can live with it, but it would be nice to get to 65 without a penalty.
No. Only watched their videos. There is a guy on YouTube that runs Peterbilt dump trucks with the 4500RDS Allison. He made a video comparing two of his trucks, an Allison and an AMT, side by side. There for awhile, Mesilla Valley was buying Allison TC10s. They stopped though because after turning the truck speed up, the fuel mileage went down.
That’s just what they told me. I’m not 100% sure on the whole speed thing. I’d want to talk about that with someone from Allison.
A full auto Allison is a completely different beast - no? How fast does Mesilla Valley travel? Being a fuel conscious fleet I couldn't see them traveling faster than 65(?)
I believe they are 65 or so, but all their equipment is decked out with aero feature possible on truck and trailer.
Ran the fuel mileage again today from January until now. 8.66 mpg, 28667 miles, 14% empty miles, usual stuff at 72k or so average weight running to the northeast and mid Atlantic a lot. I’ve been in MA, CT, and NJ a little more than usual this month.
Any issues yet with any sensors either on the after treatment or anything else? How many miles total does the truck have?
177,930 total miles. I haven’t had any issues. I’m still working on this Etrac issue for my 6x2, my fault there, and I have a gasket leaking on my air compressor, getting some oil spray. I’ll get the air compressor fixed shortly when I’m on time off. Planning on being home on the first.
