Moving the dolly by hand becomes almost impossible when there is snow or ice on the ground.

I recall a winter night at Mendota, IL where I was pulling a pup and articulator to the Boelk Trucking terminal. I was stopped by a large snow drift across the two-lane rural road. Because I could not back up with the articulator, I had to shovel my way through the drift.

 

You're right but I've done it. It helps if you have a pintle hook on the tractor. It's also hard to lock the fifth wheel in and check it because it slides so much. I don't know if you've been out west in Nevada but try pulling triples going south out of Tonopah. You've got two grades to go down and one sharp turn in Goldfield then a climb. You just about have to power slide around the turn to make it to the top of the short grade. Or even going east on I-80 from Reno to Salt lake City. I was glad to get out of that truck and into a gasoline tanker which I believe is safer.
