If you can get on line haul it's just as beneficial. It's just lower demand in my mind. You'll never find a shortage of guys and gals wanting local gigs. Going OTR is definitely a sure fire way. It's high demand for OTR drivers. As far as hometime, it depends on the driver. I stay out a month at a time, but by the time the 3rd day rolls around, I am ready to get back out here. I never stay home more than 3 days. Other drivers take more time. Some companies work well with hometime others don't. However, you dont get any layover, detention, or cpm in your recliner lol

There is a flatbed company west of Carroll County, I forget the exact name of it. One of the reasons is that they discriminated against my deafness in hiring. Made a effort to show up fill out paperwork and meet the office people ready to take care of what the application did not. It was a very long unproductive day. I don't know if they were still in business because some of what they had done borders on outlaw.
There is another company called DM Bowman of English Muffin Road in Frederick Md.They do flatbed there and regional sleeper truck out of Williamsport Md. Part of working there requires pretty exacting trucking. For example you are not allowed to exceed a certain speed, its a automatic firing if they ever saw that speed in the truck records.
Another outfit would be Hahn Transportation of New Market. If you have hazmat and are 25 and older it's gasoline etc for you. Otherwise Bulk tanking.
You also have Frock Brothers near Hanover off of US 15. I don't recall the address right off yet and do remember filling out a application with them in the second floor dispatch office 4 times a year for almost two years. I pretty much quit it. If they don't get to you the first time, forget trying them again. Write em off.
I can go on with other trucking companies in that area but I have not been there since I emigrated to Arkansas 20 years ago (Actually 21 but whose counting) Maryland has become overpriced and there is no way you can make your own living with the rents that are more than two full time minimum wage jobs each month. (About 1200...) And they have a failed government out of Baltimore City. I think they found a new leadership who might be able to straighten out the place. that is the other problem. The Violence and what not in Baltimore itself. People emigrate from the city to the western Maryland and find that they are no longer in Baltimore. Ha...
Just a few random thoughts. Just do not accept anything less than 0.40 .50 should be a decent training pay. Trucking companies insist on paying newbies 0.34 a mile if they can get away with it as they have done these last thirty years. -
Also, Abilene Motor Express hires drivers in your situation and puts them with a trainer for a few trips; probably a few west coast runs.
