As many have already said, you have to put yourself in the right market. Learn rates so you know where you stand when dealing with brokers.
What I will say tho, is building relationships with at least a few good brokers can ensure steady lanes(hopefully the ones that pay well). Under your first loads with a new broker, make sure to stay in contact. The drivers that stand out are the ones who are professional and communicate well. This helps build a connection and might lead to better opportunities further down the road.
Acquiring freight directly from shippers could offer more if you're efficient at sourcing the business. However, there are many drivers that prefer brokers because they don't have to spend time looking for freight.
