I'm planning on purchasing a truck when i turn 21(pre 2004/2007). I will have some cdl A experience before then, but since i'm not 21 i cannot drive interstate. With my own truck, will i be able to find carriers to lease onto? as well as will i be able to survive on load board and how does that work with loads hauled in the beginning will i be able to find good loads with not a lot of load board experience? All feedback appreciated.

Not as an oo insurance wont cover you

Correct. From what I've heard insurance will be your biggest hurdle that young. You may have to drive for somebody for a few years.
nitetride379x Thanks this. -
Find a decent company that you can run otr everywhere and run as a company driver for a couple years while you learn shipping lanes and all season/terrain driving. Then you will be 23 with experience driving and your new entrant insurance won't be as bad. At 21 the insurance is going to be crazy high. Good luck.nitetride379x Thanks this.

Hell I'm 40 with 5yrs experience and still being quoted $23,000. I cant imagine for a 21yr oldLoneRanger, Brettj3876, Doealex and 2 others Thank this.

I do agree that I should have some otr experience, but should I decide to go down that other road I will still Be able to find an insurer correct? A couple have said I will not. I do also believe I can activate a suspended family authority as well.kimbosa Thanks this.

Insurance will be your barrier. You would be better off being an employee driver for two years and you’ll be more marketable with two year’s experience and will have better luck finding someone to take you on with your own truck at that time.
The authority you have access to may be an option, but at the end of the day you’re still trying to buy insurance for a 21 year old.Brettj3876, D.Tibbitt, nitetride379x and 1 other person Thank this. -
Activating a suspended authority, is treated the same as a new entrant.
I was informed by an agent for great west recently.nitetride379x Thanks this. -
Thanks for all the replies, hear a lot about insurance which I’m still not clear on if I will not be able to find an insurer or if it will just be very expensive.
-
You won't get insurance cheap - PERIOD.
and if you do, you better look at the insurance agreement because it will have a lot of loop holes to protect the underwriters from paying.
The best thing is either run local which should be good for you, for at least 5 to 6 years or go drive for a company for 4 to 5 years.
BUT underwriters are looking at trucking as a means to go broke and I have been told by mine that they are not willing to write policies for new entries into this industry much more because litigation is out of control.nitetride379x Thanks this.
