Closed on the land and building next door last week. Don’t really have a need or desire for it. probably paid to much too but, you don’t get a chance to buy the property next door very often. They were originally one parcel and somewhere along the way they got separated. 83B02312-FC3F-45F9-A926-596E03E6893D.jpeg

That’s really awesome to have both properties.

How deep is that water line? Looks like it will freeze this winter where it goes into the shop.

Rideandrepair and Tug Toy Thank this.

It’s minimum of 3’. It’s closer where it goes into the building obviously but it’s as close to an outside wall as the old one was? I’ll be shutting it off if it gets into the negative degrees.

how deep should it be? I’m clearly not a plumber based on how little I charge for my labor?
    Lol

In Iowa it has to be a minimum of 48” as frost typically go’s to 42”.

When the city ran my shutoff this spring they put it at 5’ and I excavated from there to where my water comes into the shop at 5’ as well.

All of mine are somewhere between 5-6' depending on when they were put in.

Edit: however I don't live in Illinois either and frost is different everywhere. Even within the same state.

Yeah, guess I just put it in like the old one? It comes out of the well casting at 40” from the top of the casing. Best I can tell the well could be from the 20’s so who knows? The trencher can only go a maximum of 48” deep? I would of needed a back hoe or mini excavator to dig it that deep.
Well I hope it works out till I can afford a new well to be put in?

Oh well, you’ll find out soon enough! Maybe put some insulation around where it comes in out of the dirt and into the building. If this is the only thing that goes wrong after all you’ve done this past year, I’d say your doing just fine.

If it's in a location in which there is no traffic on top of it you should be fine at 4'. Under a driveway traffic drives the frost down deep.

Probably too late, but a piece of blue board insulation over the portion that is shallow entering the building might have been enough to avoid problems there.

Either way, you have high quality poly pipe, so probably the worst that will happen is you won't have water in the shop for awhile, but you shouldn't have any damage as the expansion from freezing has a place to go that isn't frozen where the trench is deeper.

I think it's safe to say many of us are envious of of your shop and adjoining property. Congratulations!
