Closed on the land and building next door last week. Don’t really have a need or desire for it. probably paid to much too but, you don’t get a chance to buy the property next door very often. They were originally one parcel and somewhere along the way they got separated.![]()

It’s minimum of 3’. It’s closer where it goes into the building obviously but it’s as close to an outside wall as the old one was? I’ll be shutting it off if it gets into the negative degrees.
how deep should it be? I’m clearly not a plumber based on how little I charge for my labor?

In Iowa it has to be a minimum of 48” as frost typically go’s to 42”.
When the city ran my shutoff this spring they put it at 5’ and I excavated from there to where my water comes into the shop at 5’ as well.Rideandrepair, BigBob410, Tug Toy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Edit: however I don't live in Illinois either and frost is different everywhere. Even within the same state.Rideandrepair, BigBob410 and Tug Toy Thank this. -
Yeah, guess I just put it in like the old one? It comes out of the well casting at 40” from the top of the casing. Best I can tell the well could be from the 20’s so who knows? The trencher can only go a maximum of 48” deep? I would of needed a back hoe or mini excavator to dig it that deep.
Well I hope it works out till I can afford a new well to be put in?Rideandrepair, BigBob410, shooter19802003 and 3 others Thank this. -

Probably too late, but a piece of blue board insulation over the portion that is shallow entering the building might have been enough to avoid problems there.
Either way, you have high quality poly pipe, so probably the worst that will happen is you won't have water in the shop for awhile, but you shouldn't have any damage as the expansion from freezing has a place to go that isn't frozen where the trench is deeper.
I think it's safe to say many of us are envious of of your shop and adjoining property. Congratulations!Rideandrepair, BigBob410, Nostalgic and 6 others Thank this.
