Decided to put a few trucks on the road, as an owner but not operator. I own the trucks but have others that will drive them. Also looking to get brokers license. Have done plenty of research, as well as talked to my drivers but wanted to come here and introduce myself. So much information out there and so much to learn and absorb. What are the important things to do/look for etc? Kinda the cliff notes of getting started and being successful? Obv looks like its important to find work and a good broker until Im able to broker my own loads. I am well funded and dont need to pay myself anything, want to put it back into the company.
Few questions I have
Best trucks to buy? Im in the Dallas area and the consensus seems to be Peterbilt, with CAT engine which means pre 2010 if Im not mistaken? Are the Paccar engines ok, or is it best to find an older one with a CAT?
BEST ELD out there or are they all pretty much the same?
Truckstop and DAT the load boards to be on?
Any truck specific apps for weather, traffic, weigh station info etc? A Waze that is trucker specific of sorts?
Both my drivers are ex oilfield and have been driving forever, accident and ticket free. One has his own MC number, is it possible for me to buy or transfer his MC to my LLC as his is well aged and should be easier to book loads as opposed to a brand new number right?

The DOT# will change and safer/any other lookup will show as a new carrier.
If a C-corp you can do a stock purchase but will end up with any liability it had.

Even with business sense, there is a new learning curve on transport that takes time to learn. Unfortunately, just being an experienced driver does not give you all the insights, no matter what drivers will say here, however starting out as a driver, o/o, independent carrier progression experience is helpful. You will learn to match your equipment to the commodity and needs of customer, fuel/ tire/service, direct customer/spot market, and compliance. Math is important, if it doesn’t add up properly- you must make changes to lane, customers, personnel, insurance, etc..Last edited: Jan 11, 2023

I don't know, I've never been an 0/0 or small fleet owner.
NASTC would be his best option.

You sort of contradict yourself, you say you have a few trucks already and after blah blah blah, you want to know what’s the best truck to get and engine. So let’s start over, do you have trucks already, what are they ? Engine ? Here’s the kicker, you say one of “the” drivers has an MC ? Did you ask him way he walked away from being an O/O ? Those should be clues/red flags on how the industry is today. But seems Money is no object to you, then be our guest, what do you have to lose besides more money ……. Pardon the sarcasm.
