Hey guys been a while since ive been on, let me first say please dont start with the usual "dont do this" or "if you have to ask you shouldnt be looking into this"
I'm a few years away from making a change but I want to do all the research I can. Let me start by saying that ive been running a Redi-Mix truck since Ive gotten my cdl and make good money, in fact more than most otr company drivers make. Ive been wanting to buy a older (70s to 80s) Kenworth or Peterbilt to fix up in the winter months.

It'll mostly be a hobby truck but eventually I want to put it to work running a end dump which is huge in my area, So my question is are there any places that would lease me on with an older truck and with me not having class A experiance? I Do hold a Valid Class A.

Also if not what would I be looking at to get my own authority? As in would insurance even take me on? I really dont want to go OTR for a year unless I had no other choice.

Ill try to explain more in depth when I get home, im typing this from a cell phone.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read and respond.

Getting insurance is possible, the rates vary greatly based on location, age of equipment, commodity hauled and so on. As for a company leasing an older truck on, that is also possible but will depend on where you are, what area you want to run and what commodity.

You mention end dumps are hot in your area, so if that is what you want to do then go talk to the companies that are running end dumps in your area. Get their DOT number and figure out where their offices are, give them a call. Especially if you see a company doing what you want and the truck is older, chances are they will lease on older trucks.

If you post your location and more details you will get better answers, even better if you post your question in the specific sub-forum you are targeting such as dump trucks, car haul, refer, etc.

Now, as for OTR for a year, that too is a myth. I have driven for 27 years, did not do a day of OTR until I was more than 10 years into my career, same for my brother and many other drivers that I know. And then, it was because I was burnt out looking at the same few roads and wanted an adventure. Did it for a short while and went back to working local. In fact, two of my uncles have never driven a day OTR, one never even left the State of New Jersey for his entire career, so it is possible to transition from redi-mix to tractor trailer and stay local if you want.

Im located in DFW area about 45 minutes from vulcan materials and Aggregate haulers. I see Statewide transport says you only need a year of commercial driving to lease on with them, but they dont say if it has to be class A or not. I sent them a email last week but havent heard anything back.

And Im not just looking at end dumps but Otr van/Flatbed as well, I just do not want to go to some Mega carrier and work for pennies if i dont have to. I do know there is a thread on here from a guy who went owner operator straight out of school and is doing very well for himself.

Hey thanks for the reply, ive updated my post with some more information so hopefully it will help you guys out, Being from DFW Tx end dumps are almost everywhere and most let you lease a trailer so i figured it would be the easiest way to get started after getting a truck.

However id be willing to go otr as well.. Even though i work at one of the best Companies in North Texas Ive just gotten burned out on the concrete industry, and ive been wanting to go owner operator for years.

Update: so I have not been able to get ahold of Statewide but Aggregate haulers requires 1 year of Tractor Trailer experiance. Age of the Tractor does not matter so long as it passes a dot inspection.

I'm going to bump this old thread,So far as I can tell no Insurance Companies today will insure new venture Drivers. Progressive was the last but so far as I can tell they no longer do this. Pretty much any company now wants at least a year OTR for you to lease on with them.

This is what the Megas and Insurance companies have done to Trucking, Now it seems you are forced to go to one of these big carriers. Even if you have been driving a truck for several years.

OOIDA will insure you. So will several others, like Progressive. You may not qualify with them is all.
