The mentor should have control of the situation, as long as he is fair there shouldn't be a problem. Communication between the mentor and the student is key here.
Squeak you are absolutely right, when the student realizes that by using max hours of work daily he will be using max hours unpaid weekly, the student should set his schedule to keep the truck rolling and profitable.
A few hours logged off duty or sleeper doesn't mean that the learning has to stop. One can still observe and ask questions without being in the right hand seat. Save some of those hours for driving where the trainee gets to make minimum wage plus 1 dollar.
Gives plus 1 a whole new meaning now!

That is the part that scares me, making sure that they really understand Plus 1, and how it can help you, and REALLY hurt you. My belief is work smart, not work hard. If a person can not make it out here solo, 8 hours a day which will equal between 450-480 miles per day, times 7, then something is wrong. It is better to maximize your hours so that you can run everyday, and not take a 34.

I will so remember this after I finish orientation. Money is important to me yes but I think learning a lot is going to help me out the most that way I can make the most money. You have to be smart. All the little things will make a big difference. I just hope I get a good mentor.
I do really really want to be a team. I don't want to go solo so if anyone's in Fontana on the 2nd and might want to team after the 240 or whatever it is I am really willing to.blsqueak Thanks this. -
What's this about students now getting paid hourly? Hell no one told me anything about this.. They no longer getting $60 a day flat out?
B*Rocka Thanks this. -
No, they are paid minimum wage now for on-duty time and minimum wage + $1 for driving time

I don't think most people realize the reason swift implemented the new program was because two many students would only drive their 6 hours a day and then not want to do any thing for the rest of their 24,
The hourly policy is supposed to encourage them to work (& learn) more faster........
Not to say that it's better our worse, but i try to get as much drive time in as possableDocWatson Thanks this. -

Mica, we do have some very lazy drivers. Why do you think Plus-1.
