The Pixel would probably be your best choice on staying on top of running the latest Android OS. I have been using a Nexus 6P for over a year, and I have been on Android 8.0 sense it has been out. Most phone are still running Android 7.X.

You might want to consider the Essential phone through Sprint. They have an offer through the end of November for $25 up front and $5 per month for 18 months then $30 buyout - $145 total for the phone. It has the most recent snapdragon 835 processor, 128 GB internal storage standard, large screen, yada yada. Downsides are a notch at the front top like the iPhoneX and bad camera software (easily fixed with a free app). For $145 it is by far the cheapest high end phone available.

    Good luck,

    Jim

Sprint has a lot of deals going on right now for cheaper monthly payments.

I use a Lenovo Phab 2 pro. It's a phablet. I love it, it's huge. Its fast and it has some very unique features found on no other phone like an AP that will measure things, and it's accurate. It has fingerprint reader which is handy as hell, beautiful screen, don't need removable battery because Lenovo will do it for you, and it has a great camera all for 350 bucks free shipping.

It's really fast because it's so big so it has room for a lot of memory. It has 4GB of DDR3 memory and 65GB of storage. And its backed by a huge computer company, Lenovo.

I have a Lenovo computer. It's been the worst computer I've ever owned.

With all due respect just because you had an issue with a laptop doesn't mean the same companies cell phones are crap. In fact the Lenovo phab 2 pro is the highest rated phablet out there.

Spend the money and get a Samsung S series phone. I'm on my 3rd one (still using my S5). My in laws and my brothers family all have I phones and they are constantly having some sort of issue...
