But currently the 11 and 14 can be exceeded by certain types of drivers under certain conditions, right? So we're right back to the problem that one common standard doesn't fit all drivers and all jobs.
Remember the movie The Fifth Element? The Bruce Willis character had a elog device in his cab that would fine him every time he did something it didn't like. That day is coming for you and me. Better start thinking about what rules you really want to have.
New rules coming regarding HOURS?

Did I say any of that? Different rules for everyone? I said we should have rules tailored to fit the job. Why shouldn't a dry van OTR driver have rules that are different from a flatbedder who spends far more time sitting and far more time doing physical labor? And don't assume I'm suggesting you should get longer hours.
BTW, what does 80 years have to do with it? What kind of trucks were they driving and what kind of work were they doing 80 years ago?Dave_in_AZ, x1Heavy and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
I oppose those exemptions. As it is now, the only time you can be fined is when you are ****ing up
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
“Rules tailored to fit the job” is pretty much different rules for everyone because no 2 jobs are the same. So who’s job are they tailored to? If the flatbed rules are based on what 90% of them do then they wouldn’t work any better or worse for me than the current rules.
And 80 years is the length of time we’ve had hours of service regulations, and now that the options are haul livestock, drive an old truck, or not cheat people are saying there should be different rules because people do different things. Everyone has been doing different things since 1938.x1Heavy Thanks this. -

Gov't will have a direct payment from your bank account as your WEAKLY pay check arrives. No need to get behind on fines etc. Gov't be happy happy.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
It doesn't mean that at all. Most driving jobs fall into easily recognizable categories.
That's not true for everyone though. Some of us are frequently bumping against artificial limits that don't make sense to us.
Yes they have. But obviously it has worked because they could cheat on their logs. And now that we can't, it's time to have this discussion.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Not necssarily artificial limits, but actually we are all different.
When I get up in the morning, I have about 16 hours before I must get to sleep again for the night. It's something thats part of my life required by the body and mind. So I have about 16 good hours to make things happen.
So what if I put in all 16 doing miles across the USA. That's the easy part provided there isnt too much trouble with traffic or bad roads, weather etc. But no. Uncle sam says 10 hours (In my time) is quite enough.
I sit there after pulling the brakes at the 10th hour legally and Im so wide awake thinking of the next 300 miles I can put away right now before dinner later that day it's disgusting.
By the same time there are days I don't do well and am sick. I'll be lucky to put in 4 hours. -
A flexible split sleeper provision where the small break stops the clock makes more sense than different rules for different applications. Without looking, I believe there were less than 3000 comments about split sleeper changes, so it appears not many people are interested in hos changes.

Flatbedders in general make more then dry van. So why would you need more hours?
-
And what about dry Van's that unload? Guys doing furniture, retail, garden supplies, feed, tires.......
I just love these fantasies where folks claim one particular truck works harder than another to justify a flawed argument.BoostedTeg, Dave_in_AZ, bryan21384 and 1 other person Thank this.
